my life and other lies: Tim Tebow and the disappearing, reappearing freedoms

Julkaistu: · Päivitetty:

I saw a picture recently that featured Tim Tebow and the text: "The people applauding Bruce Jenner for 'being himself' are the same people who condemned Tim Tebow and told him to 'keep his beliefs to himself'" All commentary about Jenner aside: Exercising your religious freedom is a right in America. I'm very happy for that. Shoving your religion down other people's throats is not. Exercising your civil liberties is not merely a right in America, but a duty. Defense of all civil liberties should be carried out by all people of all faiths, beliefs, backgrounds, gender identities and sexual orientations, and all those who eschew labels entirely. Freedom means you can do what you do. It does not mean you can harass others into conforming to your belief structure. Forcing others to do what *you* believe in is what dictators in other countries have done, and still do, in many places. It's so pathetically sad that, for so many people, "freedom" means making everyone else live according to *your* rules. That's not you having freedom- that's you curtailing the freedoms of others. Religious freedom *is* a civil liberty- but just like in following the Bible, many people pick and choose what liberties they think should apply, and what should be ignored. Freedom of religion? Totally! Marriage equality? Go to hell. (They mean it.)
