A foreigner living in Finland -

Friday, was a Friday the 13th, I was trying to blog but had computer trouble all day, and as a matter of fact almost the whole weekend went to getting it working again. I really don’t know what was a miss, but that is life from time to time, so here I am now, pretending this is last Friday, and blogging about the things that I was on about. The Sauna world championship was held for the

Ibland träffar man på de mest häpnadsväckande tankegångar på webben. Det var min som som tipsade om följande resonemang på en blogg kallad ShelleyTheRepulicanCom: "Unlike Windows, which is a mature commercial product which is normally included with every new computer, Linux is given away. Now it may not sound like much of a problem, after all there is very little profit in merely giving a product away. This would be certainly true were in not for the Linux project's seductive Marxist...

I'll start with the courses of the Fall semester Basic Course in Mathematics C3 The third and final basic math course in the CS program. The first half was pretty much Linear Algebra (matrices, eigenvalues/vectors etc, matrix exponent..) and then using them to solve systems of differential equations. Laplace transform was also introduced as an alternative to solving those problems. not. The first half was a bit scary at first because I had managed to miss the Mathematics 1 for CS program where...

*does a stupid victory dance* So I finally got a summer job that's actually related to computer science. Happy happy, joy joy! I was almost certain I'd get nothing CS related and was prepared to spend the summer mostly chilling out, maybe taking few summer classes but a couple of days ago I received an email telling that I'd actually been hired for the place I'd interviewed for some days ago. I haven't written about the interview but I didn't feel it went that well overall and was pretty sure...

Diaesityksistä on tullut koulukäytössä piirtoheittimen korvaajia. Enää vanhoja diaprojektoreitakaan ei ole, vaan diaesitykset saa helpoiten tietokoneelta. Ongelmana on kuitenkin PowerPoint-tiedostojen suuri koko, sillä oppimisalustalla opettajan henkilökohtainen tallennustila on rajoitettu. Koulussamme käytettävässä Opit -palvelussa varattu tila opettajaa kohti on 20 000 kilotavua, eli 20 M ja diaesitys, jota seuraavassa käsittelen on kooltaan 7,9 M. Siinä on tosin valokuvia...

Three new classes started today, C programming, Intro to Software Engineering and Intro to Data Communications & Computer Networks. After the first lectures, they all great. Especially the Data Comm & Networks surprised me with a really inspiring lecturer. I still have two new classes that haven't started yet, Operating Systems and Multimedia Technology. I'm a bit afraid about the OS course. I'll probably drop Multimedia and take it next year even though it's probably the one of the easiest...

'Cause your life is a show -

Today I was wearing my 0°C outfit: Dress: Miss Selfridges Hoodie: H&M Jumper: from Grandma's attic Leggings: H&M Over-knee socks: Marks&Spencer (+ DinSko boots & my new scarf which you haven't seen.) I suppose the point of this outfit is winter & girliness............ I feel like going ice-skating in it. I like the fact that I don't have to wear a coat to go out but don't feel suffocated by layers either. I've spent New Year's Eve mostly organizing my desk & drawers. And learning to start a...

'Cause your life is a show -

Winter = depressing and computer = distressing => blog - effort > blog + effort (so blog has to be a negative value, huh) I've utilized a new scarf that I found in the attic. Actually you've seen it in the background of some previous pictures. Call me simple-minded but this excites me: see you in the sunshine.

Dream diary -

A sight of some sci-fi -themed machinery room. There were two people in the room, a man and a woman. They were looking at a highly illuminative computer monitor; otherwise the room was completely dark. The man was sitting in front of the computer and used the keyboard, the woman was standing next to him, leaned on to his chair's back support and stared at the screen which lit her face. She had her short black hair tied up with some bandage on her forehead. Transition. I saw myself and lot of...

Radiohead: Kid A Emi, 2000 Tunnen vieläkin toisinaan olevani vasta tutustumassa asioihin, kuten musiikkiin esimerkiksi.

Dream diary -

I was standing in some kind of a white room with two different people. The man was standing on my left and the woman on my right. The man's head was huge. He asked me for a Gmail invitation. I hurried to the computer and sent him one. I looked at the number of them and the amount of them was reduced to 49. Miscellaneous: Want an invitation? Leave a request.

'Cause your life is a show -

This morning I was FULL OF ENTHUSIASM, ready to make half a dozen posts, happy about the pictures I took last week, etc. etc. Several hours of useless work later, I don't know what the bloody point is when Windows Vista equals little less than suicide, IE keeps shutting down, my pictures turn out crap to begin with and online photo editors systematically remove what little good they did have. Oh well, in case you were manically interested in my new coat and ankle boots, feel free to try and see...

Sax on the Web -

Image by haribote via Flickr Blues and Jazz go very much hand in hand. Starting with Blues is the way to get your feet wet in the difficult but rewarding art of improvising. Our approach is three-pronged: First familiarize yourself with Basic Blues Chord Progressions by John Lull. Then absorb the bluesy feeling by listening to the legendary Rock/Blues saxophonist Sonny Del-Rio . Then follow the Blues Rules below. Rules Of The Blues [There are several versions of these floating around in the...

International Cricket Captain 2011 doesn't break any new ground, but a wealth of real-life statistics married to a solid management sim makes it worth the investment for any budding cricket captains. The Good Good statistical realism   Well-balanced difficulty. The Bad For diehards only   Flat graphical presentation. UK REVIEW--Few genres cater so directly to a specific crowd as the management sim. Incredibly dense minutiae are a sim's lifeblood, and International Cricket Captain 2011 serves...

Google just introduced ‘Google Docs & Spreadsheets‘. Since I am a ‘googler’ I had to try it out. This will probably be the next big thing, right? Although I had just installed Office 2007 on my computer I coudn’t wait to see what would replace it! So, after rushing to Google and signing-in I started […]

I haven't been doing about anything the past few months. But I'm trying to get my life (crafting) going again. Hope someone still reads this blog. Oh, and my computer died on me... There goes ALL the crafting pictures from this year. FUCK! * While I've been silent, I've still crafted a few things. I even experimented with polymer clay. And my first project was earrings for my friend: * * And I made a new friend, obviously I had to make her something too. Oh, and she makes the BEST VEGAN...

Introduction             Being the second paper I wrote during the semester this paper comes next in this journey. With this paper it was more than just writing a paper, it was more of finding a deeper meaning within a film and expressing it with words. In class we watched the film The Social Network. We each had to discuss in a paper what we believed the cultural artifact the movie was trying to portray. It was hard to set myself on one specific idea, because there were so many seen...

Mobile phone, or as Nokia says nowadays “Mobile Multimedia Computer, is emerging as the key device in which user-generated / -originated media content is captured. To growing extent, the portable gadget is also becoming hooked to online services without PC connection. In this, there are still many hurdles to be crossed. I decided to have […]

Lennun tekeleet -

I stitched yet another Christmas ornament for a friend, Kristiina. It was a bit late (I gave it only yesterday) as I searched for my tiny red beads. I have obviously misplaced them as I had to give up and use the white ones :) I've just announced Violarium 's closeout sale, welcome to shop! I'll go back to school, I'll begin studies in January, yippee! It's been wonderful to serve customers for six years, thank you! Of course it's a bit sad to say goodbye, but I've already thought this through...

Musanarkkarin muistio -

Aion kohta lähteä kiertämään järveä ja tutustumaan Neilin On The Beach-levyyn. Tulkoon kesästä musiikkirikas ja muutoinkin antoisa! "Revolution Blues" Well, we live in a trailer at the edge of town You never see us...

Making Indigoflood's Rats and Hatchets -

So finally we had the second session for the album on last Saturday. This time we did vocals and rest of the guitars for the three songs we started last time. The tunes are Terra Fungus, Kutteri and Rats and Hatchets (or Hats and Ratchets, I never remember which way it is with the song). We started a little after twelve and got done at around six, so everything was done fairly fast. First of we handled the rest of Tero's guitars. Those got done real fast, even before Peb got to the studio...

Making Indigoflood's Rats and Hatchets -

Damn, the days just seem to roll by when it's summer time. So we actually had the first recordings already a week or so ago. We took two days with the crew saturday and sunday (7.-8.6) and laid down drums, basses and most of the guitars for three tracks. Those tunes were Kutteri, Terra Fungus and Hats and Ratchets. For once we got to start in time, as the guys arrived at Vantaa on 10.30 Saturday morning. One missed turn took the extra 30 minutes but no harm there. Toni, Perttu and Aki had taken...

I made a simple "calling cards" for my daughter(s) which enable her to make a Skype video call to me and to her grandparents without using keyboard and mouse. In order to make the call she would just show the card with right image to the reader. Computer would respond by saying aloud either "calling grandma" or "cannot make the call to grandma", depending whether the other party is online or not. Setup: iMac with Skype installed Tikitag/Touchatag rfid reader. Bought the reader and some tags for...

Ever since my change of job last summer and the fact that the new work resides physically quite far away has naturally changed my commuting routines completely; No more bus or train rides to the city center and back, usually with magazines and books to read and music and podcasts in my ears. No more handy time off both work and home for personal notes in journal, or emails. Now it has been roughly one hour car trip one way every day, only occasionally broken with days on the train. As the...

scaredy-cat -

Yesterday was a bad day. I woke up with a sore throat. Nothing felt right - I would have just wanted to sleep the day off. The sky was grey and my spirits were low. The evening before I had been too long at the university, and too lazy to walk to the grocery shop, so I couldn't even have a cup of coffee to fortify me. I had to run some errands, so I ordered myself a big cup of good coffee in one of my favourite cafés. Somehow, even when it's full, this café manages to exude a feeling of calm...
