Paper. Snow. A Ghost! -

Light Scrape -

Leaf 1 Leaf 2 The photographs were taken on November 6th. This morning there was 1 cm of snow on the ground. I commuted by bicycle, wearing the warmest gloves, and didn't get cold at all. Snow 1a Snow 1b Snow 2a Snow 2b Here are two pairs of photographs, first of each pair taken on November 8th in Helsinki, and the second on November 9th. We got a lot of snow then. During last night the temperature rose to +2 °C, and snow melted. Now it is freezing again. (Posting title is from the poem Now and Then by James Schuyler.) Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken in Petikko on March 12th, walking across the frozen snow. Today I visited Petikko once again. There were plenty of signs of spring. Hepatica is in flower, and leaf buds are green. Municipal elections will be held in Finland today. I voted in advance already. Fog 1 Fog 2 Fog 3 The photographs were taken on March 20th at Tremanskärr. This morning there was half a cm of snow on the ground, and it felt like winter. The snow melted soon, and it felt like spring. In four days I have got over 8 hours of exercise. And so far this year I have got 1,666 km riding the bicycle. Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on November 9th in Helsinki. For tonight the weather forecast promises a little bit of new snow, perhaps 0.5 cm. It would make the landscape somewhat lighter. (Posting title is from the poem Ordinary Time by Tim Dlugos.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on March 4th. The current executive branch of the US government seems to be deeply corrupted, but there is still a long way to go to the bottom, the level of Somalia, South Sudan or North Korea. Finland has been among the half a dozen least corrupt countries in the world, and I hope this continues, even though there are some worrying signs of a worsening situation. Red 1 Red 2 The photographs were taken on November 5th in Luukki. Last night we got a little bit of snow, and less than 1 cm of it still remains. The landscape keeps changing. The length of day is now 6 h 36 min, and days are shortening quite fast. (Posting title is from the poem How to Judge by Lisa Robertson.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken in Meiko on February 25th. In six days I have got 11 hours of exercise, half riding the bicycle and half walking. Spring is coming. This morning I listened to a lark singing while I was walking across fields. (Posting title is from the poem Los Angeles by Ben Fama.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow The photograph was taken on February 24th. The forecast promised sunny weather for today, but there were showers of wet snow in the afternoon. Spring is advancing, anyway. I have been thinking about the worst presidents of the United States, and noticed that there are several rankings available. In many of them James Buchanan is the worst, or one of the worst. It was fascinating to read about him. However, he doesn't seem to have been half as bad as Trump is. (Posting title is from the...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken in Meiko on February 25th. Earlier I wrote about the worst presidents of the United States, mentioning James Buchanan. Apparently he may be a relevant comparison to Trump after all, because the GOP seems to be on the brink of civil war. It is a terrible performance, and I'm feeling sad beholding a government of zombies without brains or hearts. (Posting title is from the poem Sunday by Cynthia Zarin.) Posted by Juha Haataja at...

Snow The photograph was taken on February 25th in Meiko. Today I commuted by bicycle through the central park in Helsinki, first time this year. Early in the morning it was quiet. There was some ice on the path in shadowed spots, and the ground had frozen during the night so it was easy going. Last weekend I visited the local IKEA store. That reminded me of a Trump joke: "I've seen smarter cabinets at IKEA." (Posting title is from the poem Head of Anahit/British Museum by Peter Balakian.)...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on February 25th in Meiko. This morning I commuted by bicycle once again through the central park in Helsinki. There start to be more people riding the bicycle. It has been dry and sunny. (Posting title is from the song Behind Blue Eyes by The Who.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Tulin suunnitelleeksi puseron.

Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 Snow 4 The photographs were taken on November 12th. This morning I walked two hours in Petikko. I saw two moose, but they ran away before I managed to take a photograph. Later on I met a hunter with a rifle, who was quite talkative, telling about the flooding in the forest and about the best routes. I kept silent about the moose. Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken on November 27th. It is once again the right time to observe that the orbit of the Earth around the Sun is not a circle. Sunrise will be later for a while even though the length of day soon will start to be getting longer. (Posting title is from the poem The Return by Jan Owen.) Snow The photograph was taken on January 14th. What about using his own words against him ? Here is a quote: Trump is incredibly dangerous. Incredibly dangerous! It’s obvious. He’s corrupt, he’s unstable, he’s reckless. Yemen? Disaster. Putin? Pulling the strings. We’re not safe with him in office. Totally unsafe. We need your help. When are you going to take a stand against this guy? When? He’s got to go. It’s obvious. Everyone agrees. (Posting title is from the poem Rock Me...

Snow The photograph was taken on January 15th. Are there no limits to the baseness of the baby-carrot fingers? And how is this show allowed to continue? (Posting title is from the poem Fence Repair by David Lee.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken on January 12th. During the night we got 2 cm of wet snow, which stuck into trees, making the landscape white. I walked for two hours, and shoveled snow a little bit. This week I have got 11 hours of exercise, less than usually. When I started walking, I thought about all the idiotic things done by the baby-carrot fingers so far. Shouldn't some kind of guardian be appointed to keep him out of trouble? How long will this narcissistic show go on...

Swamp 1 Swamp 2 The photographs were taken on January 8th. This morning I walked for two hours in Sipoonkorpi National Park. The paths were icy and slippery, but outside the paths the snow was packed tight and there was only 10 cm of it. I played a bit with the GIF generator which makes things illegal , using the phrase "X is now illegal". First I thought that such words as "truth", "breathing", "humanity", "compassion" and "freedom" would fit the situation. In the end I thought that the phrase...

Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken on March 21st. It seems that everywhere one looks things are turning catastrophically bad: USA (Trump), UK (Brexit), Turkey (Erdogan), ... And there is nobody to blame but ourselves. (Posting title is from the poem The Blooming of Sentimentality by Stephen Corey.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow The photograph was taken on March 25th. This morning I walked two hours in Nuuksio, circling around lake Kattilajärvi. Birds were singing, woodpeckers were knocking, and ice was moaning. It is spring. Yesterday I changed summer tires to the car. One tire was stuck and it took a while to get it loose. Today I changed summer tires to the bicycle, doing some cleaning and repairs as well. The front tire is a bit worn, and I pondered whether I should replace it with a new tire, but I guess the...

Snow The photograph was taken on November 20th. This morning I walked for two hours in north parts of Nuuksio, visiting six lakes southwest of lake Saarijärvi. I started walking half an hour before sunrise, enjoying the colors. Length of day is today 5 h 57 min in Vantaa, and 6 h in Helsinki. In the afternoon we went to see the play Skattkammarön at Svenska Teatern in Helsinki. Quite a fine performance, delightful especially for children. Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken on November 13th. This morning I walked across the open swamps in the north parts of Vaakkoi. The swamp was mostly frozen, carrying a person walking, except for some wet spots. It was good to have tall rubber boots. The weather is warming up rapidly. This morning we had -12 °C, and for tomorrow the weather forecast promises +5 °C. (Posting title is from the poem Ordinary Time by Tim Dlugos.) Posted by Juha Haataja at...
