Paper. Snow. A Ghost! -

Light Scrape -

Snow 1 The photograph was taken November 4th. This morning I walked 1 1/2 hours, climbing hills and meeting people walking dogs. A little bit of snow colored the paths white, and temperature was at -1 °C. Yesterday and today I'm driving the car a lot. Not my favourite pastime. Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on March 4th. The current executive branch of the US government seems to be deeply corrupted, but there is still a long way to go to the bottom, the level of Somalia, South Sudan or North Korea. Finland has been among the half a dozen least corrupt countries in the world, and I hope this continues, even though there are some worrying signs of a worsening situation. Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken at Niihama outdoor area in Tampere on October 28th. This morning I walked for 1 1/2 hours, and the rubber boots were useful as the paths were muddy and the swamps and ditches were flooding. Donald Trump is seeping deeper and deeper into the mire. "The president is incorrect" applies to everything he does, not only the lies but also the mistakes and the stupidities, not to speak of the money-grabbing. (Posting title is from the poem Grayed In by Martha...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken at Niihama outdoor area in Tampere on October 28th. It is snowing, once again. Depth of snow is 1 cm, and it may be that the snow melts away today. Fog 1 Fog 2 Fog 3 The photographs were taken on March 20th at Tremanskärr. This morning there was half a cm of snow on the ground, and it felt like winter. The snow melted soon, and it felt like spring. In four days I have got over 8 hours of exercise. And so far this year I have got 1,666 km riding the bicycle. Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken at Niihama outdoor area in Tampere on October 28th. The snow from yesterday melted away during the night. It rained in the morning, and I got wet when riding the bicycle. In the afternoon the temperature rose to 7 °C, and it was still wet even though the rain stopped. Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken in Petikko on March 12th, walking across the frozen snow. Today I visited Petikko once again. There were plenty of signs of spring. Hepatica is in flower, and leaf buds are green. Municipal elections will be held in Finland today. I voted in advance already. Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on February 25th in Meiko. This morning I commuted by bicycle once again through the central park in Helsinki. There start to be more people riding the bicycle. It has been dry and sunny. (Posting title is from the song Behind Blue Eyes by The Who.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Tulin suunnitelleeksi puseron.

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on February 21st while visiting Timmermalmi nature protection area. I noticed that Finland was being discussed in the United States, due to our health care system which has been extremely cost-efficient compared to the way health care is organised in the United States. Of course, fairness and value-for-money are not the only criteria in health care, but the proposal put forward by Trump and his minions makes me shudder - massive tax breaks to the richest...

Snow The photograph was taken on February 24th. The forecast promised sunny weather for today, but there were showers of wet snow in the afternoon. Spring is advancing, anyway. I have been thinking about the worst presidents of the United States, and noticed that there are several rankings available. In many of them James Buchanan is the worst, or one of the worst. It was fascinating to read about him. However, he doesn't seem to have been half as bad as Trump is. (Posting title is from the...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken in Meiko on February 25th. In six days I have got 11 hours of exercise, half riding the bicycle and half walking. Spring is coming. This morning I listened to a lark singing while I was walking across fields. (Posting title is from the poem Los Angeles by Ben Fama.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow The photograph was taken on February 25th in Meiko. Today I commuted by bicycle through the central park in Helsinki, first time this year. Early in the morning it was quiet. There was some ice on the path in shadowed spots, and the ground had frozen during the night so it was easy going. Last weekend I visited the local IKEA store. That reminded me of a Trump joke: "I've seen smarter cabinets at IKEA." (Posting title is from the poem Head of Anahit/British Museum by Peter Balakian.)...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken in Meiko on February 25th. Earlier I wrote about the worst presidents of the United States, mentioning James Buchanan. Apparently he may be a relevant comparison to Trump after all, because the GOP seems to be on the brink of civil war. It is a terrible performance, and I'm feeling sad beholding a government of zombies without brains or hearts. (Posting title is from the poem Sunday by Cynthia Zarin.) Posted by Juha Haataja at...

Parallel lines -

Continue reading →

Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken on March 21st. It seems that everywhere one looks things are turning catastrophically bad: USA (Trump), UK (Brexit), Turkey (Erdogan), ... And there is nobody to blame but ourselves. (Posting title is from the poem The Blooming of Sentimentality by Stephen Corey.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Red The photograph was taken on November 26th. This morning I walked for over two hours in the forests and swamps between Odilampi and Tremanskärr. The temperature was at -4 °C, and there was some snow and ice, but it didn't carry a man walking. I followed horse and deer trails, and other such tracks when possible. Snow The photograph was taken on November 26th. Snow has been melting away due to rain. Only about 3 cm is remaining, and in many places none. And more rain is in the weather forecast for the next two days. This morning I walked for 2 3/4 hours at Kytäjä-Usmi outdoor are in Hyvinkää, 50 km north of Helsinki. There was plenty of snow, 10-20 cm. It was quiet. I didn't meet any other people walking even though there were some tracks in the snow. (Posting title is from the poem Tooth Painter by...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on November 26th. This morning I walked for 2 1/2 hours, starting from Oittaa and going towards Nuuksio, circling around lake Sorlampi. The forest paths were somewhat difficult, due to a combination of snow, ice, water and mud. I fell a couple of times when the ice broke and my feet dropped into the mud and water beneath. Luckily the camera stayed aboveground. Tall rubber boots were certainly useful. On the south side of hills little snow remained, and...

Snow The photograph was taken on January 15th. Are there no limits to the baseness of the baby-carrot fingers? And how is this show allowed to continue? (Posting title is from the poem Fence Repair by David Lee.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Snow The photograph was taken on January 14th. What about using his own words against him ? Here is a quote: Trump is incredibly dangerous. Incredibly dangerous! It’s obvious. He’s corrupt, he’s unstable, he’s reckless. Yemen? Disaster. Putin? Pulling the strings. We’re not safe with him in office. Totally unsafe. We need your help. When are you going to take a stand against this guy? When? He’s got to go. It’s obvious. Everyone agrees. (Posting title is from the poem Rock Me...

Snow The photograph was taken on March 25th. This morning I walked two hours in Nuuksio, circling around lake Kattilajärvi. Birds were singing, woodpeckers were knocking, and ice was moaning. It is spring. Yesterday I changed summer tires to the car. One tire was stuck and it took a while to get it loose. Today I changed summer tires to the bicycle, doing some cleaning and repairs as well. The front tire is a bit worn, and I pondered whether I should replace it with a new tire, but I guess the...

Snow 1 Snow 2 Snow 3 The photographs were taken at Sipoonkorpi National Park on February 20th. The road conditions for commuting by bicycle start to be quite good. Almost all ice has melted away. The public works departments have started cleaning the road surfaces, getting rid of the gravel and dirt that was deposited during the winter. In three days I have got six hours of exercise. Perhaps I should take a rest day, but it feels so good to ride the bicycle. (Posting title is from the poem...

Snow 1 Snow 2 The photographs were taken on November 4th. This morning I walked for 2 1/4 hours at Vaakkoi, circling the lakes and swamps. The level of flooding was remarkable. There was 1 cm of snow on the ground, and occasionally it was snowing. The sun peeked between the clouds. This year is Finland's 100th anniversary as an independent state. Today, December 6th, is the Finnish Independence Day, and there a plenty of festivities to enjoy. (Posting title is from the poem Mother, I cannot...

Swamp 1 Swamp 2 The photographs were taken on January 8th. This morning I walked for two hours in Sipoonkorpi National Park. The paths were icy and slippery, but outside the paths the snow was packed tight and there was only 10 cm of it. I played a bit with the GIF generator which makes things illegal , using the phrase "X is now illegal". First I thought that such words as "truth", "breathing", "humanity", "compassion" and "freedom" would fit the situation. In the end I thought that the phrase...
