The blog post Reflection paper on globalisation: Opportunity or threat? introduced the European Commission’s reflection paper on harnessing globalisation COM(2017) 240 and the entry Fair, competitive and resilient: EU responds to globalisation indicated paths for rules, firms and societies. Here, as part of the discussion about the future of Europe - #FutureOfEurope on Twitter - we go beyond the reflection paper to look at facts and opinion regarding globalisation - European and world...

After the blog entry Reflection paper on EMU future we take a look at what has happened regarding the  priority ‘a deeper and fairer economic and monetary union’  during the first half of the European Commission’s term in office. In July 2017 the EPRS European Parliamentary Research Service published The European Commission at mid-term: State of play of President Juncker’s ten priorities (35 pages; available also in French), where the text on priority 5, A deeper and fairer economic...

The fifth among the ten priorities in the political guidelines for the Juncker Commission is a deeper and fairer economic and monetary union (EMU). The blog post Future of Europe: introducing deepening EMU mentioned the Five Presidents’ Report, officially Completing Europe’s Economic and Monetary Union , from June 2015. On pages 4-5 the presidents set out the basic elements: Progress must happen on four fronts: first, towards a genuine Economic Union that ensures each economy has the...

We are approaching the moment of truth. Let us wait for the “Leaders’ Agenda” president Donald Tusk is going to present to the European Council (EUCO), before we definitively state that the EU27 heads of state or government have become impetus takers, instead of impetus providers, as they imagined in Article 15(1) TEU. But the years since the Lisbon Treaty entered into force have revealed the limitations of an intergovernmental EU, while the world has become even more challenging. The...

The Pin-Up Finland calendar for 2018, featuring the finalists of the competition, is out now! And the very intense yearly "pageant"-weekend is also over. Elämän mittainen läksyni on: ensin pitää rakastaa itseään . The rest will come along. And kid, you’ve got to love yourself. You’ve got wake up at four in the morning, brew black coffee, and stare at the birds drowning in the darkness of the dawn. You’ve got to sit next to the man at the...

Our latest blog posts have looked at the citizens of the European Union as passengers or participants on the EU reform and Future of Europe bus. In this article we are going to track the idea of democratic citizens’ conventions meant to rebuild political Europe, ahead of the informal discussion among EU27 heads of state or government this evening in Tallinn. Democratic conventions? In the State of the Union 2017 brochure section Letter on the Roadmap for a more united, stronger and more...

In the summer of 2014 Jean-Claude Juncker presented his agenda for jobs, growth, fairness and democratic change, as political guidelines for the then next European Commission. The ten priorities available in the brochure A New Start for Europe are: A New Boost for Jobs, Growth and Investment A Connected Digital Single Market A Resilient Energy Union with a Forward-Looking Climate Change Policy A Deeper and Fairer Internal Market with a Strengthened Industrial Base A Deeper and Fairer Economic...

Read.Read.Read -

I can't even remember how many times I have done this, written a comeback post after my blog has been inactive for a while. Before, I used to feel so guilty not updating this blog and writing this kind of posts felt like an equivalent to the epitomic "walk to shame" (not that I really have any experience of that). But feeling guilty about something like this, about a hobby that should be fun for me instead of stressful, seems kind of silly to me now. Yes, I am sad that I have not been able to...

rouge and reflections -

I ended up being a lot busier than I expected in August, so I didn't have much time to post. I started back at my internship after a break in July and also spent a lot of time making final corrections and adjustments on my thesis. I was finally able to turn it in on Friday! I kind of feel bad for spending so much time on it, since at the end I felt like it wasn't as big of a deal as I made it out to be in my head. But I'm glad I'm all done now. Though I have to admit, planning my next step...

Zoo 1 Zoo 2 The photographs were taken in London Zoo on July 31st. The weather is rather cool. In the morning we had 6 °C, and at noon 12 °C. But next week the weather may warm up a bit. Green 1 Green 2 Green 3 The photographs were taken on July 31st at London Zoo. This morning I walked for almost three hours at Sipoonkorpi National Park, exploring the swamps northeast of Viirilä. I tasted blueberries, (overripe) cloudberries, raspberries and cranberries. A couple of deer fly got to me. (Posting title is from the poem Supremacy by Edwin Arlington Robinson.) London 1 London 2 London 3 The photographs were taken in London on July 30th. Today there was an announcement that yet another Finnish company may be bought out. CGI made an all cash offer for the shares of Affecto, which is a data analytics company that has been doing rather well recently. I own shares in about 40 companies, and because my background is in ICT, many of the investments have some connection to ICT, companies such as Affecto, Basware, DNA, Elisa, Etteplan, Nokia, Telia and Tieto...

London 1 London 2 London 3 The photographs were taken on July 29th in London. I felt bad today, due to nasty (and racist) Finnish men making threats towards brilliant women on Twitter and Facebook. To cope with my rotten feelings, I made a donation to the Disaster Relief Fund of the Finnish Red Cross. Afterwards I realized it is two months since I last donated my daily wage to the Red Cross. The June donation was inspired by racists as well. (Posting title is from the song Total Eclipse of the...
