Path The photograph was taken on December 9th. This afternoon it started to snow, and there was 4 cm of snow on the ground when I arrived home. It looks like winter. My old lobster-style winter gloves don't keep the hands warm any more. They we over fours years old, so I guess that was to be expected. I ordered a new pair, of different type, size XXL, and I hope they fit. I don't understand the sizing of gloves, it seems that they are always smaller than they should be. So far this year I have...

Blue The photograph was taken on December 9th. The weather has been cold, especially because of strong south wind from the sea which makes -7 °C feel much colder. I have been commuting by bicycle through the central park in Helsinki. Later this week we may get 10 cm of snow, and that may cause some difficulties for the commute.

View The photograph was taken on December 5th. Today I commuted by bicycle through the central park in Helsinki, which is nice because there are few people and no traffic lights. We had -6 °C in the morning and -3 °C in the afternoon. (Posting title is from the poem The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot.) Posted by Juha Haataja at http://lightscrape.blogspot.com/

Dark The photograph was taken on December 5th. The handheld exposure was 1 second, and there is some blur, but it is not bad. It seems that cold and dry weather will continue until next weekend. That is fine, even though it would be nice to have a little bit of snow to make the landscape less dark. (Posting title is from the poem Paradise Lost: Book 12 by John Milton.) Snow The photograph was taken on December 2nd. The weather is still wet and rather warm, +2 °C. It is dark even after sunset because of the thick cloud cover. I did some walking this morning, and took photographs, but it was far from inspiring. (Posting title is from the poem Charm for the Tooth-Ache by Philip Murray.) Snow The photograph was taken on November 26th. Snow has been melting away due to rain. Only about 3 cm is remaining, and in many places none. And more rain is in the weather forecast for the next two days. This morning I walked for 2 3/4 hours at Kytäjä-Usmi outdoor are in Hyvinkää, 50 km north of Helsinki. There was plenty of snow, 10-20 cm. It was quiet. I didn't meet any other people walking even though there were some tracks in the snow. (Posting title is from the poem Tooth Painter by...

I've set this post to go out automatically on Christmas day, so as not to spoil the surprise (in the unlikely event that my nieces actually read this blog). Don't worry, I'm not sat at my computer right now! My nieces were thrilled with the broomsticks I made for them four years ago, and they are still avid Harry Potter fans. They are members of Pottermore, and have been sorted into their houses: Slytherin, and Ravenclaw. The eldest is just starting University, so I thought a Slytherin-themed...

Red The photograph was taken on November 26th. This morning I walked for over two hours in the forests and swamps between Odilampi and Tremanskärr. The temperature was at -4 °C, and there was some snow and ice, but it didn't carry a man walking. I followed horse and deer trails, and other such tracks when possible. Berries The photograph was taken in Petikko on November 18th. This morning I walked for over two hours in Juvanmalmi industrial area and Timmermalmi nature protection area. Leaves The photograph was taken on November 4th. This morning the temperature was -7 °C when I started riding the bicycle, but it warmed up during the day to 1 °C. In the afternoon it started snowing, but that will turn into rain during the night. In the beginning of this week I did some repairs to the bicycle. The rear tire had got badly worn. Earlier I have written here how good the Schwalbe Marathon Winter tire is, but it turns out there is a big drawback: they are not durable. When I...

Snow 1 The photograph was taken November 4th. This morning I walked 1 1/2 hours, climbing hills and meeting people walking dogs. A little bit of snow colored the paths white, and temperature was at -1 °C. Yesterday and today I'm driving the car a lot. Not my favourite pastime. Lake The photograph was taken November 4th. This morning I walked for two hours at Paloheinä in the Central Park in Helsinki. I climbed hills, explored the nature protection area, and checked the level of flooding by the Vantaajoki river. I saw two white-tailed deer, and they didn't notice me until I was at 20 meters distance. (Posting title is from the poem Wheel of Fire by Ishion Hutchinson.) Blur The photograph was taken at Kaisaniemi botanic garden in Helsinki on November 1st. This morning there was a little bit of snow on the road when I started riding the bicycle. During the day the snow melted away. On the way home I noticed that the tire pressure is going down. I'm not sure whether there is a puncture or a problem with the valve. The length of day is now less than 6 1/2 hours. The weather has been rainy and clouded, so it has been dark indeed. (Posting title is from the poem...

View The photograph was taken in Helsinki on November 1st. I commuted by bicycle today. In the morning there was strong headwind, and in the afternoon backwind. While commuting home it rained the half of the way, and then it started snowing. So far this year I have got 5,937 km of riding the bicycle. Field The photograph was taken on October 22nd. In the morning there was heavy headwind, up to 16 m/s, and commuting by bicycle took an hour. During the day we got 6 cm of snow, and it turned into slush. There was strong backwind, which helped, and it took an hour to get home. Leaves The photograph was taken on October 21st. Today was a wet day, and there was snow and rain. I commuted by car and train, which was pleasant. It some point in the middle of day it wasn't quite so dark, but there was no hint of sun. (Posting title is from the poem Cabin by Anne Waldman.) Street The photograph was taken on October 20th in Petikko. Today is a rainy day. In the morning I looked at the weather radar, and it seemed that the rain would be a little bit easier for an hour or so, so I went for a walk, and got quite soaked. The swamps and ditches are flooding, and water level is high in the lakes. I need to do some repairs to the bicycle. The front tire is leaking air pressure, and I need to replace the inner tube. I'm using Marathon Winter tires, which have puncture...

Sun The photograph was taken on October 20th in Petikko. This morning I walked for two hours, enjoying the early morning landscape. There was some frost and ice, and a little bit of fog in the open fields. I met a man who wanted to say a few words. He warned that there is black ice on the road, dangerous for those who use rubber boots. Then he asked if I had some money to give to him. And then he quoted Bible and told that Donald Trump is working with the Israelis against the Israelis, hinting...

Tree The photograph was taken on October 20th. It rained this morning, and there was strong headwind when commuting by bicycle. In the afternoon there was partial headwind, but the rain had stopped. In five days I got 10 hours of exercise even though I took one rest day when I commuted by car and train. It is remarkable how Donald Trump's cabinet members fit the stereotype of villains in old James Bond movies. They are crazy, and they crab things. (Posting title is from the poem The Villain by...

Lake The photograph was taken in Vaakkoi on October 18th, at lake Saaren-Musta. In three days I have got 7 1/2 hours of exercise. This morning there was black ice on the road, and I wondered why the studded winter tires are so silent, until I realized: "It's the ice, stupid!" Lake The photograph was taken in Luukki by lake Kaitalampi on October 17th. I commuted by bicycle on five days this week, getting 9 1/2 hours of exercise. So far this year I have got 5,631 km of riding the bicycle. By the end of the year I should get over 6,000 km, but I won't reach 6,500 km which I got last year. Lake The photograph was taken in Luukki by lake Kaitalampi on October 17th. The length of day is now less than 8 hours, which means that we are really in the dark season.
