This round-up blog post has a simple main purpose. It brings together a dozen recent entries, published between 23 February and 5 March 2017 on three blogs, in English (EN), Finnish (FI) or Swedish (SV), about the EU social market economy and the European pillar of social rights. Mobile Internet As It Is -

At the end of the January comScore released interesting report: Social Networking Services are driving the growth of Mobile Internet in Europe. This is many ways interesting as it tells that mobile phone users are not just consuming and using one-way published content, like news, but also using their mobile phones to communicate and participate. Many Social Networking sites, like Facebook, has

I had to skip a flight to Lapland for giving a presentation due to the volcano eruption in Iceland – first force majeure for me. Due to curiosity, I’ve been keeping an eye on the phenomena from the social media point of view. It is obvious that once again social media is playing an important [...]

Is This (photographic) Art? -

Ran into the concept of artworld and its interesting definitions. One specifically caught my attention, namely one by Howard Becker ( Art Worlds . Berkley : University of California Press, 1982). The basic idea is that artworlds are communities of networked individuals and that art is collective actions within the community. To blend in some Forrest Gump - Art is what artist does, sir! Thinking it like this makes it easier to accept that there no (and can't be) specifiq measures on defined...

Second Life Blog by Aino Kanto -

The Finnish Adult Education Centre (of the City of Helsinki) has started a project dealing with interactive and social media web tools and facilities. I have made some notes about the early plans and goals about the project in this blog (see more from my notes at 2007 Nov 3rd).The goals have been changed a bit during these several months (actually the first ones go back to one year almost) and

5 years ago a small group including me and Teemu Leinonen formed the Finnish Association of Free, Libre and Open Source Software in Education (FLOSSE). Although we did some great things the effort didn’t last because the people involved were not that interested in running a traditional association. As in Robert Putnam’s book Bowling Alone: [...]

I'm actually a socialist. I believe in social ownership and state control of economy, and I also believe that the state should provide all of its citizens some free services like healthcare. I've lived in Finland my whole life and I'm pretty happy about the free services I've had during my life. I mean, my teeth are straight, I have no deadly diseases and althought I've been out of work for long periods, I have not starved to death. I've also never had to live under a bridge, so that's a...

Päivät termit eLearning, mLearning, Ple... saavat monen ajatukset solmuun jo taipaleen alkuvaiheessa. Olemme...

Tästä projektista syntyivät yleistajuiset tietokirjat Free as a Global Nomad ja Elämäni nomadina sekä akateeminen väitös, jota puolustin Tilburgin yliopistossa Hollannissa 18.6.2014. Väitöskirja...

Introduction             Being the second paper I wrote during the semester this paper comes next in this journey. With this paper it was more than just writing a paper, it was more of finding a deeper meaning within a film and expressing it with words. In class we watched the film The Social Network. We each had to discuss in a paper what we believed the cultural artifact the movie was trying to portray. It was hard to set myself on one specific idea, because there were so many seen...

The more I work with web analytics tools, the more it becomes clear that modern internet is not all about the hyped social networking, user generated content, ratings, rankings, peer-to-peer networks etc. On the contrast to this anarchy-looking front, internet services behind the “hood” are actually emerging to be a highly analytical discipline – even […]

Rioters have taken to the streets of Paris once more, reminding us of the massive rioting that took place only last fall. The BBC reports: Paris suburb sees fresh rioting The mayor's house is now under police guard following the riotingAbout 100 youths wielding baseball bats have fought French police in a Paris suburb, in the worst such violence since widespread riots in November. The youths threw stones and petrol bombs at police in the town of Montfermeil overnight. They also hurled stones at...

According to the south-Swedish newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad , Sverigedemokraterna is popular among youth , or, as the researcher suggets, it might just be a sign of teenage rebellion. Here are some excerpts from the article: "Every other ninth-grader does not know what party they would vote for in the parliamentary elections, or if they would vote at all, shows the extensive opinion research. At the same time the Sweden Democrats are enjoying great support. They became the most popular party...

BBC News , a bastion of political correctness, has gone out of its way and published the following article : Does diversity make us unhappy? By Mark Easton Home editor, BBC News It is an uncomfortable conclusion from happiness research data perhaps - but multicultural communities tend to be less trusting and less happy. Research by the Home Office suggests that the more ethnically diverse an area is, the less people are likely to trust each other. The Commission for Racial Equality has also...

Jussi Halla-aho has made the decision to make a move into politics, something he persisted earlier he would not do. However, in an announcement made on his website on the 20th of June, he declared that he would be running as an independent candidate for the True Finns in the Helsinki voting district. For those who are not acquainted with Mr. Halla-aho and his opinions should know that he is a fine writer with iron logic and a vicious sense of humour, the latter which he usually directs at the...

Sexual Economics: Sex as Female Resource for Social Exchange in Heterosexual Interactions A heterosexual community can be analyzed as a marketplace in which men seek to acquire sex from women by offering other resources in exchange. Societies will therefore define gender roles as if women are sellers and men buyers of sex. Societies will endow female sexuality, but not male sexuality, with value (as in virginity, fidelity, chastity). The sexual activities of different couples are loosely...

Why I am not a Liberal Note: I am using 'stereotypical' liberal opinions, which I reflect on here, and I'm well aware that these are by no means the opinions of all people who call themselves liberal. Here is simply a random collection of view points, which I've perceived to be fundamental to and dircetly connected to liberal thinking and which I disagree with from a meta-political and philosophical point of view. This is an absolutely biased analysis from an absolutely biased point of view...

So, the proverbial excrement has really hit the fan. Massive demonstrations around the Middle-East, a French editor was sacked for printing the cartoons in France , several Arab countries have withdrawn their diplomatic representation in Denmark, Palestinian Islamist groups have threatened Danes and Norwegians and they are declared valid targests as are any diplomats from these countries. Muslims in Finland have joined the boycott and condemn Denmark and Islamists in London have threatened...

Flaky detection and awkward menus seriously hamper this dance fitness game. The Good High-energy workouts   Jazzy neon visuals. The Bad Inconsistent movement detection   Awkward menu interface   Unreliable online play. It's a no-brainer: dance-fitness craze Zumba is good exercise. Try not working up a sweat mimicking the up-tempo jigging of a Zumba instructor, successfully or otherwise, and so much the better if you enjoy the cheesy tunes. But what makes Zumba a vigorous aerobic workout also...

Back in the day, even the women were hotter. Working time is the period of time that an individual spends at paid occupational labor. Many countries have regulations for a duration of work week, and for example in Finland the maximum hours of work week is 40. In 2008 Finnish people worked 40,3 hours a week which means that supposedly we love working overtime. Still we work less than Europeans in average (41,8 hours a week in 2008). Austrians work 44 hours a week and Irish for only 40 hours a...

Dili Days Decrease -

I haven't been updating my blog properly for a while, so I haven't reported that it was not only Dili in turmoil, but we had some terrifying incidents here in Helsinki too. These things happened around 1st of May celebrations, which are a really big thing here, but I missed them this year because of an irritating deadline for a conference paper, set very untoughtfully to 1st of May (no cultural sensitivity there!). Robin has been covering both Dili and Helsinki incidents in his blog, so look...

Rather who hasn't? When or even you apply for a job, it is relevant to know what kind of google fu karma your name turns. If I was hiring someone before I interviewed the person, I'd see what I can find online. Not just googling them, but also in the usual social medias, Facebook, Linkedin, twitter, myspace... all of them. Bad finds such as complaining about the current or previous employer online would be among the thing to turn me off, but those are of course only relevant when I know that...

I'm getting really tired about the constant spam hitting livejournal. At least my accounts. So, I've changed the settings to pre-screening EACH comment that isn't made by anyone in my friends list. This isn't exactly the way I like it, and I doubt if it'll actually make any effect. Let's see. Really. I don't want to see spam comments daily. Bunch of my friends have moved to other blogging platforms. I've tried a few others, but I'm not exactly happy with any of them. If you know of any good...
