Student strike 7th-8th December – no lectures, no work, no cramming, just resistance Gathering 7th Dec 18.00 at the front of Porthania. Party!!! STRIKE! Promises, promises, once again empty promises. The student money has lost 20 percent of its real value since early 90’s, but still, this year like all previous years, there will be […]

The first Sustainable Lifestyle Awards for high school students has recently started. This means that selected pilot high school student groups from Finland and Germany try out a new concept and tools to learn about and get active on sustainable lifestyle. The pilot project is organised by One Did It and the UNEP/Wuppertal Institute Collaboration Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production,

I am holding a NITEC certificate since 2006 after graduating from ITE College East. For the past few years, I being trying hard to get a high qualification, however till now I yet holding any. In year 2007, I choose wisely to get into a local polytechnic which I believe it will have a strong impact on the path I choose in future for my career. Nanyang Polytechnic or Singapore Polytechnic? Yes, only this two poly that I gain my interest. Therefore, all six choices is Either Nanyang or Singapore...

EdisonLearning Inc., formerly known as Edison Schools Inc., is a for-profit education management organization for public schools in the United States and the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1992 as The Edison Project, largely the brainchild of Chris Whittle. The initial expansion of Edison included the involvement of Tom Ingram (campaign manager and chief of staff to former Tennessee governor and United States Secretary of Education from 1991-1993, Lamar Alexander), Benno C. Schmidt, Jr...

Quick note Life has been throwing little pebbles my way for the last couple of days, preventing me from posting anything. Last week I got some sort of funky stomach flu or food poisoning, which kept me in bed for the better part of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Saturday I did make it to the gay sauna ( not the seedy hamam-kind, please) at Jani's , even though there was much crayfish standing between me and 80 degrees of sweet relief. Didn't make it to Mixei though, still had bad mojo left...

In the world today there is tremendous amount of activity around the subject matter called anthropogenic global warming (AGW). It is claimed, that the human created increase of CO2 in the atmosphere has caused, and will increasingly cause increases in temperatures. UN sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was awarded a Nobel prize in making AGW known within the political circles and in the worldwide community. Significant amount of economical resources are invested and...

Ok everyone. I didn't make it to Chicago this summer, but it turned out that Sami and I are moving to Canada. And of course Sigvard is coming with us. :) Everything happened very fast and is still confusing. Sami got a job and I applied for an internship. We got lucky and now are waiting for the work permits. Wild. I've been working the whole summer in a laundry service. The job is killing me, but it also motivates to study harder. :) I shouldn't complain, I get paid pretty well.. I guess. My...

Fox tales without heads -

I just finished making a summary of the student feedback from the general archaeology course last autumn. Finally that course is wrapped up. I bet the average student never realizes how much behind-the-scenes work is involved in teaching. The feedback was nice to read, though, we - meaning the other lecturer and myself - got good marks from the students. I got this link from a friend. Hope you will find these as amusing as I did.

Truly Us -

Hi guys again, sorry for the break in blogging! For the last month I've been drowned by work and as if that wasn't enough I've been ill all the time. I decided to show you what's been going on in my life for the last month or two - well basically since I got my very first iPhone! I wanted the golden 5s, but I thought I needed a UK contract immediately so decided not to wait and instead get the black one. (But now I heard I could've waited for that golden one after all...) Anyway, hope you enjoy...

Vaihdossa Englannissa -

So, we have settled in Canada. We're doing great, Sigvard the cat is good and everything is going well. Christmas is coming up and I can feel the panic raising in me: presents!! I've been online, trying to find gift ideas.. I found a very informative and good site on Christmas. Unfortunately it is in Finnish, but everybody from Finland, take a look: Joulu.info . I work at a local daycare and I've had some issues at work. I know that interns often get taken advantage of, but it really feels like...

Opiskelen liiketaloutta Saimaan ammattikorkeakoulussa , suuntaumiseni on juridiikka. Vastaamiseen menee noin kymmenen minuuttia. Vastaajan tulisi olla suomalainen neuloja (kyselykin vain suomeksi), myös ulkosuomalaisten...

Sometimes I've thought about how Korea came into my life and why I feel so strongly about this spesific country. My story with Korea dates back to the beginning of the 1990s, when I was checking the pen pal ads from Finnish text TV at home. Young people from Korea were looking for pen pals around the world to practice English through a pen pal club. I took the address and wrote a letter stating that I was interested in writing with someone. I didn't know anything about the country at that time...

Whoa. Finally I got my ass up. It's now 2 and half months until I go back. The 9 months have passed so quickly and I feel I have grown so much as a person and a human. I'm not so much a child as I was before, which feels nice. I am going to reach my adulthood and high age of 18 in 11 days now. Woohoo. Or so. I love Yukiko. Last 4 months have been the best in my life as I have spent all of my freetime with Yuki (thus not having the energy or time to write journal). I've made quite a few...

I still can't understand what's wrong with those urls down there... Well, I'm now exactly 2 and half hours away of changing family. I feel so happy that I could... I could... well, I could do something really cool. Now I am wasting my time in Cybac (internet cafe). If I only had known this place before (well, I was supposed to go here with Graham, but never actually got inside...). Hell of a cool place. Totally different from those open, boring and terrible cafes we have in Helsinki. I like it...

I finally grew up from my childish anger towards my host parents. They are trying their best and I'm just kinda ignoring them and not really doing stuff that an exchange student should do with them. I just ignored them. Now I finally realized how childish I have been and we had a little talk and it's pretty much fixed now. We agreed that from now on we will only talk japanese and english only when it's absolutely necessery. With my friends I've been talking japanese-english-mix for quite a...

Pilnmēness -

I went for a job interview yesterday. Sounds good, looks good and before all... I would just work a bit - get to know how work life really is. From the school, where I have been working before, they also told that there might be possibilities to work from next fall again. But it wont help much, if the work starts in August. Of course, financially being unemployee in Finland, is better than be student. So, at least I will give up for 1 year in Uni. Helsinki. I've to see something else than...

I've had inconsistent week. I've got sad news, but also good news. And own life is better than average. Anyway, our loved grandad - pappa Pauli passed away on Tuesday evening, alone in the hospital room in Mikkeli. He was old, 87 yrs, and had various old people's diseases. Though it wasn't predictable, somehow it's relieving - thank you Pappa for all the things in life. Tuesday was also my father's 55th birthday - that made the day even more inconsistent. I got congratulated my dad in late...

The Real Encyclopedia -

Question: Why hasn´t there been any new Q&A´s during the past month? Answer: The problem is that at the moment most of the problems in this world are solved. I have spent the last month trying to create more problems so that the demand for this type of encyclopedia would remain. Other option would be to expand this to other galaxies which still have unsolved problems. I haven´t decided which road I will follow. Fortunately, I can guarantee that the problem solving continues. NEWSLETTER I...

As a doctor and a public health -student, I've been listening to many conversations about the importance of screening cancers. There was an interesting article in The New York Times about this. Cancer is a tricky disease. Screening for cervical, prostate and breast cancer has been considered "a life-saving act", but...   "In recent years, researchers have found that many, if not most, cancers are indolent. They grow very slowly or stop growing altogether. Some even regress and do not need to...

Sorry for the negligence. I'm back. Back in Sapporo. Back from what or where? Well, a trip. Or rather, a journey. Yeah. Journey sounds more grand. Let's stick with that. T his journey began on the 28th of February, 2007, and ended exactly three wee ks later, 21st of March. Not even arguably, undeniably one of the best journeys of my life. This enormous excursion included strange and won derful coincidences, new acquaintances, old friends, good luck, bad luck, beautiful scenery and of course...

Finn again wakes -

No, this post is not about Iraq, or any other political issue I have normally written about. This is about... wait for it... TV! Hooray! In recent days I have been so fortunate as to be exposed to some quality TV: I´ve spent hours on end watching old Monty Python stuff, and I´ve also enjoyed watching numerous episodes of the 1967 British classic, The Prisoner . I must say nothing that has been produced in recent years comes even close to the brilliance of these two classics. To prove my...
