Suomalainen kelloharrastajaskene kokoontuu isolla joukolla 20. toukokuuta Helsinkiin The Watch Show Finland -tapahtumaan, jonka vetonauloina ovat suomalaiset eturivin kellontekijät Kari Voutilainen, Stepan Sarpaneva, Torsti Laine ja Ville Hänninen. Vahvistettujen huhujen mukaan paikalla julkistetaan useampia kellouutuksia. Kattilahallissa järjestettävä tapahtuma kokoaa edellä mainittujen herrojen lisäksi koko joukon suomalaisia kelloalan toimijoita, ja etenkin käytettyjen arvokellojen...

"There´s too few roles available for boys. They are very early divided into winners and losers." This assessment by a social worker specialised in marginalised boys made me think. Young men in this country are surely not doing too well. Even when there are more and more dads who play an equal role in bringing up the kids, too many boys still grow up in a climate where showing emotions is a sign of weakness and expressing violence strengthens your position in the group. Boys don´t cry. Be a...

I've got many interesting e-mails from all around the world and it was not easy to decide which subject I should discuss. The reason I chose this topic was the urgency. The writer told me that he has serious problems trying to figure out what is this mysterious Nobel Prize all the newspapers are writing about. That is why I´ll give the complete information I have about the Nobel prize. THE NOBEL PRIZE The Nobel Foundation was established in 1900. The first 42 years the name of the foundation...

W henever I have the time and money, I love to go travel and see my dearest friend. He lives at Tampere which is way too far but luckily close enough to visit at times. A week ago it was the last week of my holiday and I decided to use it to travel there. I just love to travel, and I mean any traveling - even domestic traveling counts. I love to sit in the train and watch the scenery pass by. Whenever it's raining it adds a certain vibe to the mood and I love it even more. This time I was...

I don't think the countries who frequently do well and win in the Eurovision could possibly understand the effects winnig the Eurovision can have on a nation that 1) is thirsty for international recognition 2) takes Eurovision song contest very seriously and 3) has never won before. The nation is going nuts. I have had so much fun today reading all the possible news sites and "post your comment" portals, nevermind the wide and vast Blogistan. And it is nice to do this from a distance: if I was...

Vilken konsert!

Pimeys iski. Ensilumi satoi.

I've been curious how the other people like their phones. I mean, of course, the people who use Android instead of the one true phone, the iPhone. My teenage daughter has been torturing a Samsung Galaxy Ace for a year now and I suggested to her we could exchange phones for a limited period of time. She said yes, a bit too eagerly. I suspect I will have a difficult time getting the iPhone 4S back. (I was told her friends at school said your dad must have lost a few marbles to do something so...

As I first arrived here, I couldn't find any differencies between Finland and England. Now that I have spent here almost two months I begin to see just how my two countries differ from each other. It's all the small things that you take for granted. The standard of living here in England is quite different from which I have accustomed to growing up in Finland. Carpeting and separate faucets for hot and cold water were practically unknown to me before I set my foot on this land. Heating and...

The power of social media is amazing. With an exceptional idea anyone could gather even millions of Youtube views in few days. Or what do you say about these Finnish digital natives? Smoukahontas (Sara Forsberg) published a Youtube video " What Languages Sound Like to Foreigners " and gathered 10 million views in two weeks. Two weeks later she was visiting Ellen Degeneres Show and she signed a several hundred thousand euros deal . Lare Lekman published his aerial sighseeing in Helsinki filmed...

Imagine that you could hire a worker for 25 euros a month, provided that you pay housing and a few meals. What consequences would it have? If it's cheap, buy more than you need Finnish mentality is that when you are at work, you should be doing some task which fulfills the goals of the organization (this includes being on watch for orders). If you're not, then the work is not well organized or you're lazy. But if work is cheap, why bother about efficiency. Downtime and idleness are ok. For...

Finland has won the Eurovison song contest. Now, this was always thought to be something as probable as pigs having wings. After more than 40 years of repeted humilation, the victory came with an utterly unconventional pice of music, ' Hard Rock Hallelujah ', presented by a monster band Lordi . An as if that weren't enough, they also scored the highest points in the history of the contest. Now, I just wonder who seriously wants to listen to that sort of music... (many people, apparently). Well...

A few words about the Cure concert which was about a week ago in Helsinki. Finally I got a chance to see my favorite band or should I say listen to their live show because we had quite a poor view from the back seats. This of course flattened a bit the atmosphere because I'm that  visual person that I always want to see what's going on on the stage and now we only saw that there is some people on the stage.. even those screens were fairly poor or the cameramen showed all the time the same...

In September, neo-Nazis killed a guy on the street, next to the railway station. His name was Jimi Karttunen. I walk by there every day when I go to university. There had been a neo-Nazi rally outside the station; members of the so-called Finnish resistance movement had paraded with their flags and challenged passersby. One of them talked back, and spat at the nazis' feet. They killed him. A nazi ran up and kicked him. He fell, injured himself badly, and later died. It's 2016, and nazis killed...

Britannian X Factor - finalisti suomalainen Saara Aalto kävi alkuviikosta Suomessa yllätysvisiitillä. Maanantaina 5.12 hän esiintyi Helsingissä Senaatintorilla. Saara heitti huikean "homecoming" shown Tuomiokirkon portailla. Jouluvaloja, ilotulitteita, valkoisiin pukeutunut Saara...

Economists are wrong, when they say that the invisible hand will guide resources in the most effective way, giving everyone the best possible outcome. - In the long run. They may actually be right, as far as only money is concerned - in the long run, but if current all over well being is concerned, they could not be more wrong. Yet the world is run by their rules. For the worse of us all. (Well; except for he filthy rich, of course). In the long run wealth may perhaps be distributed in the most...

Yes, yes, I know I'm a few days late with this but in my defence I am crazily busy with my final major project for my degree. So what is the consensus on The Great British Sewing Bee ? Image courtesy of Radio Times I unfortunately missed the first 15 minutes and then was constantly interrupted throughout by my father sending me to get bobbins, thread, oil, screwdrivers, machine feet and various other bits every few minutes (he was fixing my singer so I can't complain really). However I think I...

After the FIAF Congress in Los Angeles I returned to Helsinki via Rochester to participate for two days in the already legendary The Nitrate Picture Show, now in its third edition at the George Eastman Museum.
