Kuva Hanhensulka 2012, A sun sets in St. Kilda. February 17 was like any other day, only different. Obviously, Dear Reader , there are dates in ones life that are more important than some others. This one is used to mark the passing of one lifetime. One tries to ignore it as much as possible. It was easy when there was a cushion of parents to rely on. Funny thing is that even at a mature age, as long as they are there, one is still a child, well, to a certain extent at least, feeling protected...

Original post : Day 08 – Tour de Finnmark 2016: Kåfjord – Billefjord by Raffaello Tesi on LittleCamels.com There are interesting reasons for cycling a route back and forth: for example you remember the place where you’ve been picking blueberries, and stop for picking more. Or maybe to take a picture you forgot to take. In this particular case, cycling south from North Cape made me realise how fast nature changes in just [...]

These hectic months haven't had me time to think about Christmas much. Today I suddenly had Christmas kicking me right in the back of my head and instead of going to bed early as planned, I stayed up installing fairy lights on the windowsill, wall and around the doorway. Maybe it was the first snow in Helsinki, blogosphere filled with Christmas themed posts or a lazy evening at home while the Presidental Independence Day reception was on in television. I'm badly missing some warm glogg now, so...

Today is un-official Universe loves Success day. Day that started not so well was saved by the mighty Universe. I've been so lucky today that I'm now concidering buying a lottery ticket. Many happy things happened today, one of them being able to attend a roller derby bootcamp in Stockholm next January! Pic Thank you Universe, I love you too!

Internet Makes You Dumb - videomoottoriturpa -

Brooke Greenberg is the size of an infant, with the mental capacity of a toddler. She turned 16 in January. Photo by ABC News/Greenberg Family. ... Among the many documented instances of children who fail to grow or develop in some way, Brooke's case may be unique, according to her doctor, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine pediatrician Lawrence Pakula, in Baltimore. Interesting story, but I'm not sure if we (= people) really need eternal life or fountain of youth, I think life as it is now, is...

Hey. I was supposed to be asleep, but getting called to a job interview in three hours time woke me up, so I thought I'd use that time to post. I was supposed to write about fate and whether to believe in it or not, but something came up last night which has been at the front of my thoughts since. Last night I was chatting with a friend of mine, talking about how to take and accept criticism, when suddenly she says "Hey, I think I know why the rumours are going around. What with you having that...

All through my life, one of the very common philosophical and/or religious questions that keeps repeating itself is that of fate. Lately I've been thinking about it, so I thought I'd write down a thought or two. The general idea of fate is that people believe that all or part of the events in our lives are preordained , or determined to happen beforehand, and that the choices we make in some of the crossroads of our lives are in fact so far away from random that they are the only possible ones...

Walked through Helsinki to my car at close to 5 AM today. After dancing in the overwhelming noise of the club I had been in since 11 PM, the contrast was steep. 2 degrees over freezing, empty streets except for the occasional taxi queue or person walking home, cars whizzing past... The mood reminded me of what it's like to sit in a long distance bus or train at night. You feel completely detached of it all. Time doesn't seem to pass, or even exist. You have no past, no future, only the moment...

Just a quick word. What with things happening and me realizing a lot of things about myself, I've made a lot of thought-work lately, much of which concerns how I act around people. These realizations have led to a lot of calibrating that I've done, and that I need to go out and test in practice. And so as it happens that I suddenly have a lot of free time on my hands, my sleeping rhythm has turned upside down, and the result is basically, that for the longest time I'm feeling this distinct...

Spring is here. The Russian forest fires cast a weird, dreamy light despite the warm sunlight. We got just about one week of snow this year. I have landed a job at a Finnish game studio. I will be working as an assistant producer from June. This is my dream come true and I know [...]

I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m thinking about books I’ve read before – books I don’t normally recall during a normal day, good books, books I’ve read years and years ago, some as far back as fifteen years back. For example: Do androids dream of electric sheep by Dick and Gibson’s Neuromancer - [...]

Täällä aiemmat autokuvat ;-D Snapshots from a hot summer day in central Helsinki. And yes, I had to take a picture of that cute car again! :-D There was a right color background.  Here  are the previous car pics ;-D 1. Pitkästä aikaa matkustamista ratikalla. Olin pukenut ihan liikaa päälle...

20/21 09: London I meant to post the impressions of my first real business trip during the actual trip, but at hotel internet rates, I suddenly found myself with another batch of unposted travel notes. Across from me sits a woman in late thirties, sleeping. She’s in a junior position at a company. She’s resting her head against a stranger. The stranger is taking it like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Being a commute sleeper myself, I think it is. On the right, a man wearing a [...]

Now, so no-one gets any crazy ideas that my being happy will make this a smiley journal, let's bring up the subject of death. I'll start this off with what happened last week. Some of you reading will remember that I've been talking about my grandmother getting worse off these past few years, that I've been wondering when the last time I'll see her will be. A bit earlier I wrote about how she'd stopped eating, and not soon after she quit taking medication and drinking as well. All she did was...

Very short post before work. Errare humanum est, nullius nisi insipientis in errare perseverare. If there are any latin buffs in my LJ friends, well, you're free to correct the above. It could be pretty bad since I just took it out of some latin quote book a long time ago. What it's supposed to say, however, is "To err is human, yet only a fool repeats the same mistakes again." Which is a good line; We all fuck up some times, but we shouldn't get too caught up on it. If we dwell on our mistakes...

We've been looking for a boardgame and have heard plenty of good things about Ticket To Ride . Eventually we got the Europe edition , because the map looked a lot more interesting than in the original US edition. We've only played it together once, but came away impressed by the simple, rich rules. The components are also first-class. What really impressed me was their online version . You get a code with the boardgame which allows you to play the game's online version for an unlimited time...

More shameless remarks by Larko -

Related to a discussion about winter weather and road conditions, I searched up a post in this blog a few years back. Embedded in the post is a YouTube video about slippery road conditions in Seattle. The video shows cars bumping into each other as drivers in Seattle are not accustomed to snow and ice […]

More shameless remarks by Larko -

Due to a memory failure earlier this week I ran out of toilet paper this morning and had to inspire. At the corner store, buying – among other essentials – toilet paper, I detected that I had forgotten to pick my new bank debet card and the old one had meanwhile expired. I was lucky […]

Ain't talking -

Recently my adopted home country has been pissing me off more and more. The weather is crap, dealing with any government organisation is painful and the small island has been feeling tinier by the day. I'm not one to stay in a crappy situation forever but the issue is where to go from here? The last time I felt like this was nearly ten years ago in Finland. I was so miserable that the decision of leaving was easy. I wanted out and it didn't really matter where to. Now I'm older, more careful...

I am a healthy person. Regardless, I can't play Burnout for more than around half an hour at a time: I can't keep gas (RT) and nitro (A) down all the time without my right hand aching. I have often wondered how much my life would change if I was no longer able to hold a joypad or use a keyboard and mouse. (It's pretty scary, actually: people break their hands all the time.) Everyone is not as lucky as I am . I find the people's dickheadedness in this post's comments section astonishing. The guy...
