Light Scrape -

Red The photographs were taken on October 8th. We have still snow on the ground, but it is melting away. Tomorrow I'm planning to go for a long walk near Tampere, and I hope there will be still some snow remaining. (Posting title is from the poem The Steam Shovel by Eunice Tietjens.) New year/ New us -

Katy Perry talking about the hate that she is recieving from cutting her hair. She does not want to be the Katy Perry that everyone knows. She wants to be "Katheryn Hudson" (her real name) which is true self. She cut her hair because she doesn't want...

--- Aivan erityisesti tietenkin parin-kolmen viime päivän aikana kriisi maassamme hurjistui selvästi, kun Perussuomalaisten puoluekokous valitsi viime lauantaina kokonaan uuden puheenjohtajiston ns. halla-aholaisista syrjäyttäen ns. soinilaiset > Jussi Halla-aho valittiin varsinaiseksi puheenjohtajaksi...

Partial Recall -

This weekend it was once again time for Swecon, Sweden‘s national science fiction convention. The convention was called Kontur and held at the Clarion Hotel Gillet in Uppsala—a very nice venue for a convention of 200–300 members (which category I estimate this one falls in), and a lovely city to visit. Swecon was a three-day convention as usual, but since Thursday was a holiday (and it’s a Tradition to go to Åland on Ascension Day for an sf con), a bunch of us Finns started the journey...

By Omar Al Saadoon and Luay Al Khatteeb The concept of the "Rule of Law" is a very wide subject encompassing issues such as institutional reform, human rights and socio-economic issues. This post, however, is intended to give an overview of the legal concept of the rule of law comparatively speaking with common law jurisdictions and major countries of the BRICS. Introduction The underlying concept of the Rule of Law is not new to Iraq. Hammurabi's world famous Code of Law which dates back to...

Music when the lights go out -

On Saturday morning i took my bags and tent and biked to the railwaystation. Anne was waiting for me there, she had our traintickets and our festivaltickets . So the train came, we hopped in and sat there up to Toijala. There we changed the train. This second train took us to Turku. 'Cause it was very early morning (clock was something like 9:45) and we were pretty tired, we had so darn freaky conversations. And we laughed all the time. And we laughed even more when we noticed that one girl was...

Another attempt at monthly updates. I'm actually at a great reading mode this year. 75 books by the end of Junes, so I might even reach 140-150 by the end of the year. But that always depends on the reading, since some books take more time and effort than others. 66. P. N. Elrod (ed.): Hex Appeal and 67. Paula Guran (ed.): Vampires: The Recent Undead Ok theme anthologies, with some better stories and some not-so-good stories. 68. Johanna Sinisalo: Auringon ydin Mielenkiintoinen kertomus...

Just as airlines work under an air traffic control system, it’s time for a space traffic management system, some experts say. In fact, work has begun on a blueprint for a first step toward that goal: a civilian space situational awareness system. Linkki

Mmmm... I don't like cheese fondue, but this was delicious! It was ski day of the clinic last wednesday, skiing wasn't that spectacular, besides my awesome crash in the fresh powder snow, when I was supposed to show my colleagues, how well the fins control every kind of winter sports... In the evening we had this great dinner at a steamship at Lake Lucerne. To the fondue we had chicken, pork, beef, different vegetables and sauces, rice, fries... And ice cream with chocolate sauce as dessert! Of...

Joten arvosteluja tulee. BUTTERFLY remote-control: Tämä on kauko-ohjattava "perhonen", muodoltaan kuitenkin pienesti pitkulainen, jossa on nystyröitä. Perhonen oli vaikeasti puettava, surina oli liian äänekäs, siihen, mitä lupasi. Että kukaan ei huomaisi? Ehkä ravintolassa (tosin myyjä kyllä tämän tiesi kertoa) ja sen lisäksi todella tönkkö päällä. Vibra oli ihan ok, mutta ainakaan itselläni...

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that many people turn to when they are suffering from unsightly varicose veins. Those large purple veins that protrude from a person's skin are not attractive and can cause people a great deal of anxiety. It causes them to feel less confident and self assured. When a person suffers from varicose veins and/or spider veins, they often want to know how to rid themselves of their ugly veins. Many sufferers turn to a doctor for relief from visible veins...

Oh, hello there! I’ve been very, very quiet, sorry about that. The reason is that I was too occupied with my role at IndoorAtlas building their engineering team and working on the scaling of that platform to pay any attention to writing articles on the side. Well, no longer, so I’ll try to mend my ways. Because this post is of a pretty personal nature, I’m posting it here - the next ones will more likely be on the Metrify blog . A quick recap of the past year and a half, without going...

W-w-w-wabbits ahead! -

Continuing the 30-days meme The most major fear of mine is losing control. It is something to work on. It manifests itself in many ways, such as I start to panic (fear) running, when someone holds my hand and I cannot be sure that I'm not going to trip and hurt myself. Please, don't ever make me do that. Fear of tripping and hurting myself bad is also matter of control. Every now and then I get these (irrational) feelings of fears of losing balance when walking down the stairs. I know this is...

This here video clip ('courtesy' of The Atlantic Magazine ), taken from space several hundred kilometers from Earth, obviously, of a flight passing the world's tallest building brings the missing Malaysian Airlines' flight MH370 (a Boeing 777-2H6ER on its way from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Beijing, China, with 227 passengers and 12 crew members) in mind in a flash. It seems we, the humanity, can see what is going on in our airspace with amazing accuracy. Note that in the video, the satellite's...

You know when you live in a dark hole of an apartment that natural light never touches and can't take any decent photos for days because of it?  I think I might have to get some sort of a daylight studio lamp once the days get shorter. Anyway, I'm here with a little review of A'Pieu's Moisture Nude Foundation (SPF30 PA++). I've been using Mizon's Hydra Full Solution Water Volume Moisture  BB cream for the past year, but it recently started to run out. I really like it and might buy it again...

(CNN)Everyone exposed to formaldehyde in some laminate flooring could experience adverse health effects, according to a revised report issued by several government agencies. The revised report, released Tuesday, also found lifetime cancer risk from the flooring to be higher than identified in the original version of the report. "The American Cancer Society estimates that up to 50,000 of every 100,000 people may develop cancer from all causes over their lifetimes," the CDC said. The original...

East of the Sun -

Though this time an electronical one and purely one-sided, for which I'm immensely grateful. There's this person I know from recreational circles, who went to New Zealand to become a missionary. Until then she seemed one of those unassumingly religious people who "are in faith" as we say here but don't really make a huge deal about it, but her communications before her departure and her destination itself began to raise red flags with me. Now before she left she had asked in an email for anyone...

Puhumattakaan omasta etu- ja takapihasta. Pientä remppaa pitänee tehdä, tai talo on tosi hyvässä kunnossa, mut vähän...mummo. Ja muutetaanki luultavasti vasta tammikuussa 2009. Picture a Boeing B767 at Narita by K. Kitou for Narita Airport This comes from an Australian friend of mine who has a friend who has a friend whose friend is the airline pilot who wrote the account below (and we are not even speaking about the ‘degrees of separation’ here, although we could be). It must have been mighty exciting in the air, too, when the earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan. --- I'm currently still in one piece, writing from my room in the Tokyo/Narita crew hotel. It's 8am...

Ruotsalaisen professorin Lennart Hardellin tutkimuksissa matkapuhelimen käytön teinivuosina aloittaneilla on nähty viisinkertainen pahanlaatuisen aivokasvaintyypin...

Sewing Machine from the Past and Present Sewing Machines from the past did not use electricity. They used a peddle called a treadle instead of electricity. Now we just use electricity. Sewing Machines were made out of wood and metal. Now they’re not. Now there made out of plastic and metal. Sewing Machines in the olden days only did one stitch. They only did a straight stitch. Now they can do zigzags, three step zigzag and lots more. To control the speed it would depend on how fast you...

Daedalos Memento -

2006 may well be the year of dawn of a new era for business aviation, which has been anticipated ever since William Lear Jr. rolled out his first LearJet-23 in October 1963. Although successful (but accident-prone in the beginning: 10 of the first 100 produced were destroyed), Lear Jet was clearly meant for very rich people, who would fly from their New York, London, Moscow or Jeddah luxury homes to equally luxurious villas in Florida or French Riviera, before boarding a luxury yacht for a day...

np. The Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control "Edessä on pitkä, kuuma kesä" lupasi Iltalehti loppukeväästä.

Was reading an article about Chrysler decreasing their decision time drastically and that led me to thinking about metrics that could be used to measure decision making. Couldn't think of any besides the obious of length of decision process. Brief googling didn't make me much smarter either. Please provide links if I have been blind and overlooked something. I would think it would be good to start with question if measuring decision making is even necessary? I think so, if for nothing else then...

Rioters have taken to the streets of Paris once more, reminding us of the massive rioting that took place only last fall. The BBC reports: Paris suburb sees fresh rioting The mayor's house is now under police guard following the riotingAbout 100 youths wielding baseball bats have fought French police in a Paris suburb, in the worst such violence since widespread riots in November. The youths threw stones and petrol bombs at police in the town of Montfermeil overnight. They also hurled stones at...
