Most electronics DIY projects I’ve worked in the past have involved digital communication protocols such as USB, UART or PS/2. Sometimes when first twiddling with a new protocols, everything works nicely. Other times, things don’t quite work the way they should. In the latter case, a logic analyzer is an invaluable tool, essentially a multi-channel … Continue reading Hands-on review of IKALOGIC SQ200

There are few tools that are essential for an electronics hobbyist. When I started, I had a soldering iron, a multimeter and some components, and that was about it. That got me quite far because you can do simple debugging even with a multimeter, but once you start to do any communications, you will either … Continue reading Picoscope 2208B MSO Review

Sorry for the negligence. I'm back. Back in Sapporo. Back from what or where? Well, a trip. Or rather, a journey. Yeah. Journey sounds more grand. Let's stick with that. T his journey began on the 28th of February, 2007, and ended exactly three wee ks later, 21st of March. Not even arguably, undeniably one of the best journeys of my life. This enormous excursion included strange and won derful coincidences, new acquaintances, old friends, good luck, bad luck, beautiful scenery and of course...

This battery project, requires some additional electronics. Main purpose is to keep output voltage stable as the input voltage changes (depending on the amount of 4S LiPo cell discharge level). There is many options and manufactures to look at... First I will check what local stores (like YE, Partco and Elfa) are selling. I will make later decisions, what voltage converter to use. Because of efficiency requirements, converter module based on the linear technology, is not an option here...

Hyvää iltaa, aprillipilaiset lukijat. Tohtori vietti jälleen aikaa sakkikerhossa ja kiusasi matemaatikkoystäväänsä lukemalla pienen otteen John Dee -elämäkerrasta: "Among scholars and mechanicians in England, Dee was known primarily as a mathematician (which, in the opinion of Dee and his colleagues, was synonymous with philosopher). Mathematics was still suspected of being one of the black arts, however, and to ordinary people it was a frightfully dangerous study. It had barely begun...

Look what the mailman brought: It’s a shiny (or maybe matte?) BeagleBone Black, freshly arrived (actually it’s been over a month, but time sure flies…) from Newark element14! I’ve been doing Raspberry Pi related hacking for a while, but especially when the Pi was still fresh and new, I did from time to time consider … Continue reading BeagleBone Black GPIO Benchmark

Turn off lights and all electronics (like computers, televisions, stereos, and video-games) when you leave a room.  Use the microwave instead of the oven for cooking your meals.  Open your blinds or curtains on sunny winter days to let the sun shine into your home.  Save hot water by taking short showers instead of baths  Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.  Don’t leave the refrigerator door open. Every time you open the door, up to one-third of the cold air can escape. Help...

This project was born as a sidetrack of another one (I’m planning on building a $10 DIY Bluetooth page turning pedal for my piano and iPad sheet music app, similar to PageFlip Butterfly). I’ve been tinkering with IR and the TSOP38238 IR receiver modules I got from Adafruit and Sparkfun. An evolution of my PICDIV-board from 2016. Takes 10MHz input and produces 1PPS (one pulse per second). This one has a TADD-2-mini inspired sine-to-square converter on the input (far left), a PIC12F675 with Tom van Baak's PICDIV-code (right), an ICSP-header for programming, and output-buffers inspired by the pulse distribution amplifier. Stefan DK3SB, sent me this picture of his version of my frequency distribution amplifier. He modified the PCB to make it narrower (160mm), to fit a  Hammond1455R1601 enclosure (about 25 euros from Farnell). Nice work! KiCad sources and gebers hopefully to follow, on ohwr.org

THS3491 looks like a good op-amp for frequency distribution amplifiers. I tried it with a slightly modified FDA-design. With 200R feedback/gain-resistors it self-oscillates, but with 1k resistors (976R suggested in datasheet) it is stable. However I see 16dB of gain-peaking! Using +/-13V3 supply-rails it does drive a 20Vpp sine-wave-ish looking waveform into a 1 MOhm […]

Aivon has now produced around 16 of these distribution amplifiers. There's a new op-amp which might be interesting to try for the FDA board: THS3491. It has a grounded pad under the op-amp, so we need a new EP-variant of the PCB.

We entered Rwanda knowing about their dislike of plastic bags. The idea sounded truly wonderful. Everywhere in the world we had spotted plastic trash, even in the Darien Gap . Plastic seems to be the most visible sign of civilization and the legacy of human kind that will last for hundreds of years after we are all gone. What happened in the Ugandan-Rwandan border was a bit less wonderful. Customs officers demanded us to open all of our bags and backpacks and started pulling out our staff that...

Korealainen Samsung Electronics on julkaissut toista vuosineljännestä koskevan tuloksensa. Kuten osattiin odottaa olivat lukemat äärimmäisen hyviä – liikevaihto kyllä putosi hieman 58,48 biljoonaan woniin (44,5 miljardia euroa), mutta operatiivinen voitto kasvoi kuusi prosenttia ja oli 14,87 biljoonaa wonia (11,3 miljardia euroa). Liikevaihdon pudotusta Samsung selitti odotettua heikommalla älypuhelin- ja näyttöpaneelimyynnillä, vaikka toisaalta yhtiön muistipiiribisnes takoo...

Rake. Something no Poker Player can avoid, at least when playing for real money and playing at non-home game. So it is in order you know all about it, if you don't already. Rakeback is the opportunity so many decide not to tell new players. Instead these people and sites go for personal gain and leave the innocent new player unaware he/she has just lost thousands of dollars of potential gain over time.
