I was reading something on fivethirtyeight.com last year, and came across a link to their article on designing the best board game in the world , which turned out to be Twilight Struggle . Since we were making a trip to Stockholm in January, I took the opportunity to visit the Science Fiction Bokhandeln , where board games are consistently cheaper than in Finland, and pick up a copy. Twilight Struggle is a card-driven board game that covers the global Cold War. The board is a map of the world...

I have played or at least tried several new games recently. The first one is Rain for PS3, which I pre-ordered in good time, because I knew it would be "my kind of" game. The main character is a boy, who is visible only in rain. When sheltered from rain, he is invisible and only his footsteps and stuff he moves when walking by can be seen. He tries to reach a little girl who is just like him, and there are also monsters, who are visible in rain, invisible out of the rain. The concept is great...

While War of the Ring is a fantastically good game, its expansions can also be fantastically hard to get hold of. Their rarity means that when I was lucky enough to see a copy of Warriors of Middle-earth at our friendly local game store, I pretty much bought it immediately. Warriors adds six factions to the game, effectively taking event cards from the base game, like ents, and expanding them into full factions with figures on the board, which the players can activate and mobilize for the war...

Reading this rather amazing story about cross-border arbitrage , I could not help but think about how it applies to game design. Here's how the arbitrage math adds up. The ferry costs approximately $275 round trip, and gas is about $8 a gallon in Sweden, which, if we assume our car gets around 30 miles per gallon, gives us $435 in expenses. Throw in food, lodging, and other miscellaneous costs, and the total should come in around $600 or so. Remember, diapers costs more than twice as much in...

With industry suits convinced that the most effective way to expand gaming is by making simpler, less dynamic experiences to appeal to an uninitiated majority, publishers are going bonkers trying to cash in on cheaper games. In fact, for all its Zen-like appeal, Nintendo's Blue Ocean philosophy boils down to a neo-hippie way of saying that they’re embracing the casual market. We didn’t realize that meant re-branding old games, but here we are dealing with Magnetica . Or Puzz Loop . Or Zuma...

Steam Halloween sale had some interesting games at very affordable prices. The first one I played was Deadlight , a side-scrolling zombie apocalypse. I actually managed to finish it as it's often easier to just run and avoid the zombies or to lure them into traps than to actually try shooting them (I'm a slow shooter and really bad at aiming). The story isn't spectacular, but interesting enough, and the limited movement of a side-scroller makes it easier to figure out what to do next, because...

Improving the Picade arcade dumell Fri, 10/28/2016 - 12:27 The Picade is a great little device that pretty much anyone can put together with nothing but a screwdriver. It does, however, have a few shortcomings and room for improvements. The most obvious shortcoming is the 8 inch screen shipped with the Picade. It's good, but it's only 8 inches. The cabinet is designed to take a 12.1 inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio but such screens are hard to come by these days. The second shortcoming is...

Last time on Crusader Kings II, I got myself well into the 13th century and secured the Empire of Suomi. Unfortunately, my prospects for further expansion weren't great, because I think that's what you call a blob right there: Luckily for us, though, the Justanids to our south collapsed; less luckily, the Byzantines and Hungarians were quick to the spoils. The nobility provided some entertainment. This, however, is where we ended up. The empires of Suomi, Byzantium and the Mongols carved up...

Fennis mira feritas, foeda paupertas: non arma, non equi, non penates; victui herba, vestitui pelles, cubile humus: solae in sagittis spes, quas inopia ferri ossibus asperant. - Tacitus, Germania, XLVI Emperor Éomer I (1056-59) inherited both the Mercian empire and the crusade in Finland. With his son, Éomer Éomersson (I did not pick that name), coming of age on his succession, we now have three consecutive generations of crusaders against the Finnish pagans. I was all set to write up our...

I mentioned ages ago that before we got into this whole living card game thing, the previous time I played any kind of card game that wasn't either bridge or poker was with a Magic: the Gathering Ice Age starter set. The thing about Magic is that as near as I can tell, Richard Garfield pretty much invented the modern collectible card game. All the other card games we play, whether Lord of the Rings , Game of Thrones or Arkham Horror , use mechanics that are functionally almost identical to...

"If a man must needs walk in sight of the Black Gate, or tread the deadly flowers of Morgul Vale, then perils he will have. - Aragorn, in the Lord of the Rings, Book II, chapter 2 It's been ages since I've done one of these posts! I did a sort of stress-relieving project over the new year where I finished Bethesda games I hadn't gotten around to finishing, i.e. Skyrim, Fallout 4 and - finally! - Morrowind. With that out of the way, my next gaming project had to be another shot at Crusader Kings 2. With so many new DLCs and patches out, I figured I needed to get reacquainted with how it all works, especially now that Monks and Mystics promises to make playing in Catholic western Europe a little more interesting. I'm...

I talked about Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor before, and I quite liked it, because I thought it was a very succesful take on Middle-earth, and great fun to play. Eventually, I also got around to picking up the sequel, Shadow of War. John Howe: Shelob , 2000. ** To start with the least surprising stuff, the timeline is still all over the place, as it was in the previous game. The watch on the Black Gate ended in the year 1640 of the Third Age; Minas Ithil falls in 2002. So 360 years separate...

The Xbox is five years as of today. It really doesn't seem like so many years. Allow me to recall some Xbox moments in my life. The Xbox party. I went to this Microsoft-sponsored Xbox party, given out by the Pelit magazine. Our crew were all readers of said magazine. It was a hoot, and I think I decided that I needed an Xbox at the event. Dead Or Alive 3. I could not believe how good DOA3 looked. It still ranks among the top cats, mind. Instalment 4 doesn't have nearly the same impact...

Since the official release date of Middle-earth: Shadow of War is tomorrow, this feels like a good moment to say a few words about its predecessor, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor , or, to those of us who play the Lord of the Rings living card game , The Morgul Vale : the video game. John Howe: In Mordor , 1989. ** I've been playing the Xbox One version, so strictly speaking this is a review of that. Ensimmäinen päivä uudessa koulussa hötäköity läpi. Aamulla hieman ennen kahdeksaa lähdin, tulin takaisin viiden maissa. Lauluja ja leikkejä, ryhmäytymistä ja kiertelyä. Iltapäivän viimeisenä osuutena pubi ja juomalauluja. Maanantaina, haloo?! Livistin karkuun yhden toisen sellaisen kanssa, jolle alkoholijuoma ei tässä vaiheessa maistunut.
