I have played or at least tried several new games recently. The first one is Rain for PS3, which I pre-ordered in good time, because I knew it would be "my kind of" game. The main character is a boy, who is visible only in rain. When sheltered from rain, he is invisible and only his footsteps and stuff he moves when walking by can be seen. He tries to reach a little girl who is just like him, and there are also monsters, who are visible in rain, invisible out of the rain. The concept is great...

While War of the Ring is a fantastically good game, its expansions can also be fantastically hard to get hold of. Their rarity means that when I was lucky enough to see a copy of Warriors of Middle-earth at our friendly local game store, I pretty much bought it immediately. Warriors adds six factions to the game, effectively taking event cards from the base game, like ents, and expanding them into full factions with figures on the board, which the players can activate and mobilize for the war...

Reading this rather amazing story about cross-border arbitrage , I could not help but think about how it applies to game design. Here's how the arbitrage math adds up. The ferry costs approximately $275 round trip, and gas is about $8 a gallon in Sweden, which, if we assume our car gets around 30 miles per gallon, gives us $435 in expenses. Throw in food, lodging, and other miscellaneous costs, and the total should come in around $600 or so. Remember, diapers costs more than twice as much in...

I did a sort of stress-relieving project over the new year where I finished Bethesda games I hadn't gotten around to finishing, i.e. Skyrim, Fallout 4 and - finally! - Morrowind. With that out of the way, my next gaming project had to be another shot at Crusader Kings 2. With so many new DLCs and patches out, I figured I needed to get reacquainted with how it all works, especially now that Monks and Mystics promises to make playing in Catholic western Europe a little more interesting. I'm...

"If a man must needs walk in sight of the Black Gate, or tread the deadly flowers of Morgul Vale, then perils he will have. - Aragorn, in the Lord of the Rings, Book II, chapter 2 It's been ages since I've done one of these posts! I've been taking a bit of a break from the Lord of the Rings LCG, but the Wilds of Rhovanion announcement got me excited to play again, and while we were waiting for the Haradrim cycle adventure packs to turn up, we finished working through the Against the Shadow...

I mentioned ages ago that before we got into this whole living card game thing, the previous time I played any kind of card game that wasn't either bridge or poker was with a Magic: the Gathering Ice Age starter set. The thing about Magic is that as near as I can tell, Richard Garfield pretty much invented the modern collectible card game. All the other card games we play, whether Lord of the Rings , Game of Thrones or Arkham Horror , use mechanics that are functionally almost identical to...

Steam Halloween sale had some interesting games at very affordable prices. The first one I played was Deadlight , a side-scrolling zombie apocalypse. I actually managed to finish it as it's often easier to just run and avoid the zombies or to lure them into traps than to actually try shooting them (I'm a slow shooter and really bad at aiming). The story isn't spectacular, but interesting enough, and the limited movement of a side-scroller makes it easier to figure out what to do next, because...

And far away, its dark head in a torn cloud, there loomed the Mountain! - The Hobbit, chapter X Having made it over the Misty Mountains, sort of, in the previous instalment of our saga quests, it's finally time to take on the second Hobbit saga expansion, On the Doorstep . John Howe: Roac, son of Carc , 1979 ** Flies and Spiders Before we get to talk to ravens, there's only Mirkwood to get through, and that means spiders. To get into the spirit of the source material, there's a poison mechanic...

One of the main reasons I got the Game of Thrones card game was so I could obsess about deckbuilding again. My Lord of the Rings deck is humming along quite nicely, and I've even succesfully built a bunch of decks for other people to use that they've come back to play again. But they're kinda done for the moment. So I needed a new reason to obsess over cardgamedb.com . It was going to be Warhammer 40,000: Conquest , actually, but then Fantasy Flight and Games Workshop split ways , and I ended...

Since the official release date of Middle-earth: Shadow of War is tomorrow, this feels like a good moment to say a few words about its predecessor, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor , or, to those of us who play the Lord of the Rings living card game , The Morgul Vale : the video game. John Howe: In Mordor , 1989. ** I've been playing the Xbox One version, so strictly speaking this is a review of that. Set between the events of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, you play a Gondorian ranger on a...

Last time on Crusader Kings II, I got myself well into the 13th century and secured the Empire of Suomi. Unfortunately, my prospects for further expansion weren't great, because I think that's what you call a blob right there: Luckily for us, though, the Justanids to our south collapsed; less luckily, the Byzantines and Hungarians were quick to the spoils. The nobility provided some entertainment. This, however, is where we ended up. The empires of Suomi, Byzantium and the Mongols carved up...

The Journey gets an interestning start My folks gave me a ride to Tampere airport and there I met my travel mates Juuso and Pekka. We also met a new guy, Ilari (also from Tampere University of Technology.. just like the rest of us). Together we flew to Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Then the most amazing thing happened. We were waiting for the Helsinki-Bangkok flight as some airport staff member came to us and asked: "Would you like to earn some money? All you have to do is just not to go to this...

So, after Bangkok I flew back to Penang . I didn’t have much time this time but I wanted to go for tandoori chicken. God I missed that food.. it’s just so good! In the next day I sent one package (13kg - clothes, school books etc.) to Finland and went to the airport again. This time I had a flight to Kuala Lumpur and again to Tawau, Borneo . Well, flights didn’t go like planned and I needed to sleep one night at the airport in Kuala Lumpur . I can tell that sleeping there is not so nice...

Just the two games tonight. Goals from Ivan Huml and skipper Ilkka Mikkola gave us victory after Kim Strömberg’s early goal gave Tappara the lead. Exergame-project just accomplished a prelimiary study of braingaming. Thanks to Amo Oy we got NDS consoles and the games: Big Brain Academy and Brain Training to be utilized in user tests. Our consumer researchers organized group interviews with experts, seniors ( Enter Ry ) and 45+ working age people. The results were very encouraging and rousing! We shall continue more practical research tasks in the fall 2007 hopefully with companies active in the field.

Ian Bogost from Georgia Institute of Technology proclaimed that: "Those interested in exergames should be particularly interested in establishing new ritual practices unique to videogames. Guitar Hero and Wii Sports are successful examples of ritual-bound physical games, but they borrow their rituals entirely from other domains. " Social rituals might be just what is needed but I think this comment also highlights the variety of important issues when building up a new game genre or form of...
