And worse, at Sunday noon its dimensions decrease to 1.45. No wonder I occasionally feel a little confused about our geography... Ok, maybe I need to explain a little. Assume we are given distances between random pairs of points in a hypercube of unknown number of dimensions and extent. A little calculus shows that if the coordinates of the points are uniformly distributed along each axis, the square of their distance has an expectation of a 2 N / 6 and variance of 7 a 4 N / 180 where N is the...

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2012 will be a better year than 2011, in every aspect. And what better start for a new year than a blog post about UFOs from the last! I have been hesitant to blog about UFOs as I can't take decent pictures of them - examples of that will follow -, but blogging about finished projects only produces .12 posts per year and it would be fun to post a bit more often. (One could always post pictures of recent purchases but one is ashamed to do so anymore, considering...

Ateisteista, uskonnottomista ja muista ei tykätä. Usein aika kategorisesti. Tämä on toki ymmärrettävää, sillä aika monet ovat kuin minä: I am well past debate.

Sunday was the five-year anniversary of this here blob, which I've neglected in the past months in the interest of Rookie , high school, friends, sleep, and other things. Aside from that, I don't feel like I have much to say, or rather, I prefer now to say it in private. My most recent journal is my favorite thing I've ever made, and nobody will ever see it. I have been thinking a lot lately about what validates an emotion/event/observation, makes me feel like it really happened and I really...

Jim Dahl´s blog -

It has been quite a while, but now she is back – Hulda. At this time she was somewhat reserved. I’ve read a story of a poet, who had several cats. One was called Brigitte Bardot, because she liked to lay down on her back with her feet wide spread. The poet told Brigitte Bardot, the person, did not do the same for him.

Heidi's Knitbits -

I'm not the only one with a bun in the oven at the moment, so I've been doing some gift knitting. Let's just hope the recipient doesn't read the blog before the package arrives... Baby Booties again. This time the yarn is Sandnes Smart. This pattern is so versatile. It's simple, but you can adapt it any way you like. And all little babies need little booties! I also made something for the mom and dad to be. Pomatomus for mommy. The yarn is Storm in the Attic, Storm in Wolhalla. Adapted version...

My life is full of...? -

Flushed with anticipation After potty training two kids in two different ways I am finally getting ready to potty train my last baby. While the little angel is the apple of my eye, she has just hit her terrible two's . My instinct is to prolong the potty training during this rowdy, defiant time, but the desire to be diaper free is over powering. So how do I start this transition to diaper freedom? PLANNING! I spend about a month trying to determine which methods of potty training will best fit...

Alrighty! I finished my Pikachu, whom I affectionately call Chuckychu since he's, well, a bit off his rocker. Once you take in all his magnificent craziness he'll haunt you forever in your dreams. The pattern is from here . I'm quite proud of myself for interpreting the instructions, in French no less. Now I'm familiar with the most common crochet terminology in French! That definitely widens my horizons when I search for new patterns. Without further ado, here's Chuckychu in all his glory: His...

Stephu's Complete Guide to Celestial Linguistics -

Today I had to end a life. (I would like beg your pardon in advance for the incoherence of the following. It is not something I feel comfortable writing or thinking about, but I have to do this.) I was walking my dog and she apparently thought tonight a nice evening for some roadside field vole hunting. Unfortunately(?) she was quite successful. I was too slow in pulling her back after I noticed her having gotten wind of something _really_ interesting, _really_ interesting things for Tessa (the...

Sitting will kill you. It's almost as bad as smoking. Don't believe me? Read Arsebestos, by Neal Stephenson in his compilation Some Remarks , or more fully, Deskbound by Dr Kelly Starrett. So as a matter of urgency, I created a standing desk adaptation for my work space at the Waterfront Studios. The heart of the desk is a lovely piece of walnut, left over from both my sister's bookstand , and Heli's meditation stool . The design is just two boxes, one tall for the monitor, and one wide for the...

Fanny and Alexander: Isak Jacobi (Erland Josephson) tells the tale from an old Hebrew book. Fanny och Alexander: Ingmar Bergman directs Erland Josephson. You are journeying along an endless highway together with many other people. Wagons drawn by big horses rattle past, forcing the wanderers and the herds of cattle to the sides of the road or down into the deep ditches. The road leads across a stony plain where nothing grows. The fiery sun burns from morning to evening, and nowhere can you find...

You're trying to come up with stuff to do to kill time in Animal Crossing: Wild World. That's when you snap back to your senses. I've been using AC:WW to fill in the blank moments between more meaningful activities. These kind of games are good for that purpose - like smoking a cigarette in a public place just to keep your hands from groping random females...

Vaihteeksi jotakin mitä en ole aikoihin tehnytkään. Kuvia vanhoihin kirjojen kansiin. My last empties post also covered two months. I kind of like the idea of making this a bimonthly thing! Anyway, here's my most recent report of all the stuff I've managed to use up. Lumene's Waterproof Eye-Makeup Remover makes yet another appearance. They changed the packaging earlier this year. Here you can see the old and the new bottle side by side. I like the new version a lot. I think it looks a lot sleeker and more current than the old, slightly tapered one. The old packaging on the right...

Shiny sharp things -

It has been a very long time since my last post; I have spent relatively little of it in the workshop, other than to make some scabbards, but a while back my friend Heli asked me to make a meditation stool for her. I jumped at it as a cast-iron excuse to potter about with chisels and planes. Once we had discussed the basic idea, I made a quick maquette, nailed together from bits of pine. The maquette was too ugly to photograph, but did its job; my friend made suggestions about the pitch, and...

My sister, a writer, is marrying David, a historian and writer who has a special interest in 18th century France. So what could be more fitting than a Roubo bookstand? I came across it in an article in  Popular Woodworking Magazine  (Feb 2011), picked up on a trip to the States. In the article, Roy Underhill not only shows something of how to make it (though it's not a how-to article), but also provides a translation of the original section from Roubo. Further help came from watching the...

Kalle Mustonen is a Finnish contemporary artist who reimagines modern culture in monumental and mythic terms, as in his intriguing large-scale wooden sculptures with shed-like interiors that visitors are often invited to peek into. The Gnome King series is based on stories from European folklore and recalls a certain variety of garden ornament. It also references a darker ecological and political message.      I met and worked with Kalle in 2004 in Orivesi, Finland, and immediately knew...

Listening to Crazy Bitch from Zippy Videos. It is rainy, was out walking and mys shoes and feet got wet. I'm glad to be alive. Once again. All dramatic feelings of losing that person will sink down when I'm able to forget he has ever even existed. And it'll be easier every day, just have to be patient. And not think about him at all. He doesn't deserve it. Actually. To be honest (to myself).

My friend Juha came from Finland to see me and wanted to try what it's like to travel without tour guides and tourist buses. So I took some time off from my university classes and we jumped on a bus and headed to the capital of Spain. Madrid struck us with the same astonishment I got the last time I was there. Madrid is situated in over 600 meters from the sea level like most of the central Spain. Is that what gives this city the feel of an anthill..? In the museum of modern art of Reina Sofia...

STUFF ON MY MIND -

Yesterday we visited P's sister HM. She has a 2-year-old girl called Anni. I've been thinking about two recent situations with her that have made me think about what children need and how adults can support them.  The first scene happened when we were leaving on an earlier visit. Anni and HM, her mother, went to a room that had a sofa and a window to the yard, so that Anni could watch as I and P were leaving. Anni got on the sofa and suddenly fell with her right foot between the sofa and the...

A journey to a healthier life. -

I've never, ever, ever have liked running. Never. In fact, I even remember my gym class teacher once telling me that I couldn't run. Like that was a hard fact that couldn't be changed. At least after then, I've never even tried jogging. This autumn I've taken a project to start living at least a little bit healthier. So, as a part of my project, I went walking (speed-walking, you might say) around two weeks ago, for the first time in an extremely long time. I didn't go alone, no, I had my iPod...
