Crafts and Dreams -

Here I am again... A lot of time has passed again since my last blog update, so I'll tell you about things that also passed some time ago: my trip to Finland in August. I had actually thoguht about writing here already from Finland, I had a text in my head and all, but there was really no time for anything like that. Normally I'm busiest in Finland when I'm Helsinki and try to see everyone in the last few days, but this time I was running around all time. First due to an extra trip to Helsinki...

What always stops me is the fact that I realize that I do not understand things fully. That happened to me today again. I listened a lecture about comperative regional analysis and I saw a paradox of a sales person, who is about to visit number of cities. The point was that he has to visit all those places and travel as little as possible. In other words, optimatize the route and you will have the right the right answer. Sounds easy. For exaple, the optimal routing for 24 978 cities of Sweden...

Hubby and I spent a weekend in Imatra. Just two of us - and tens of thousand of other people, who had came to Imatra to follow International Road Racing Competition. It is different for me now. To follow motorbike races. Seven years I was hanging in pit stops, following races - and scared. now I am able to just be there like an average spectator. There was excitement from the very beginning of our trip: this was the first time we used Motobiili - our son's motor home - all by ourselves. Even...

Any in NZ -

Our time in Finland is coming to an end, again. I feel adrift, unwilling to travel, unable to stay, unfocused with everything that I should be doing. The early summer has been the coldest in 50 years, they say. Lucky me! Finland is really trying to freeze us out. I can handle the weather though, surprisingly. It's the cold muteness that I'm still not acclimated to. I feel like an idiot trying to make eye contact with other parents in the park, co-travellers in the tram or even the cashier in...

greetings from berlin! in addition to exercise there are few things in life that lift your serotonin levels like a trip in the company of great women. ready to take off. morning view. i am not sure what in berlin strikes me as full of life. in itself the concrete gloominess is brightened only  by street art and tivoli lights marking restaurants and stores this time of the year. the magnificent promenades are not lined by lush trees as they are from spring till fall, but somehow there is a...

The post TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2018 appeared first on Alexa...

STUFF ON MY MIND -

There is a story about someone's  PhD reseach about 7-13-year old Finnish children and studying English in today's Helsingin sanomat . The surveyed children don't consider the English they learn when gaming "proper English" , and don't see much relevance for lerning to write English (this is actually expressed rather vaguely in the article; it's possible that I misunderstood something). "Real English" is learned at school from books, the children think.  I don't remember if I had that kind...

Sorry for the negligence. I'm back. Back in Sapporo. Back from what or where? Well, a trip. Or rather, a journey. Yeah. Journey sounds more grand. Let's stick with that. T his journey began on the 28th of February, 2007, and ended exactly three wee ks later, 21st of March. Not even arguably, undeniably one of the best journeys of my life. This enormous excursion included strange and won derful coincidences, new acquaintances, old friends, good luck, bad luck, beautiful scenery and of course...

From touristy Patong beach we took a local bus to Krabi and watched the great Waterworld movie on the way. It was good to watch Kevin Costner speaking thai. From Krabi we headed to nearby Ao Nang which is another beach resort area. We have been going out couple of times and I was also happy to meet my good old travel mate Andy from Germany. I was complaining about hearing too much German in Australia but on the other hand there's so many Finnish people here in Ao Nang that you'd propably copy...

Travelling is my passion and this is something I spend time thinking especially during the holiday season. All right everyone. It's been a while. I hope you all had nice holidays and the new year is starting well. I have only seven weeks left at the day care. That's a good thing. Well, actually I kinda like it there now. Oh, I guess I didn't tell you that the bitchy director got her sorry butt fired after a couple of complaints. So, after that everything has improved a lot. Good for me. We were in Chicago right before Christmas. It was a fun little weekend trip to see old friends there. We went to...

I was recently studying and translating a letter by Seneca (Epistulae Morales 28) as required for a course, and it evokes some thoughts about this blog… I’ll post some pieces of my Finnish translation separately, but here are some general comments in English. The complete original Latin text is available at the Classics Library (you have to scroll down a bit until XXVIII) and an English (old-fashioned) translation by Richard M. Gummere in the stoics.com The letter begins: Hoc tibi soli...

Wow.. it has been a long time since I wrote here last time. Heh, it's a bit funny that I wrote earlier that I will write here maybe twice a month. Huh, that just ain't gonna work. I realized that I am living here on Pulau Penang just an ordinary life. Nothing very special is going to happen that often. So I decided to forget this blog for a while. But now I am back. Why? Probably because I felt like writing something up again. I just felt like gathering my memories here a little bit. The thing...

Kaktuksia eri puolelta Amerikkaa, Meksikoa ja Väli-Amerikasta. Moortens garden on upea paikka ihastella näitä kasveja Palm Springissä.

Finland is for the most part a quiet land, where a ramshackle cottage by a lake and a properly heated sauna is all that's required for happiness. It's a vast expanse of forests and lakes and more forests, punctuated by towns full of people who are genuinely surprised to see tourists. During the months of the midnight sun, coastal regions are a sailing and fishing paradise. Inland, the largest unspoilt wilderness in Europe attracts thousands of trekkers every year. In the south, the capital...

Visit Finland -

Too often visitors to Finland only visit either the capital, Helsinki, or parts of Lapland in the very north. While this is understandable, as the capital city is bound to attract a lot of interest, and as the skiing conditions are great in the north, it is a shame because the most interesting travel destinations are found between these two places and often remain unvisited by tourists. In this site I will attempt to display to you readers some parts of Finland that you may not find in most of...

"The Bhutanese love archery. They also love drinking. They tend to combine their two passions, and this is worrying." Before coming to Bhutan, I read a pile of books trying to grasp this country, most of them written by Westerners. Out of these travel/autobiography accounts Eric Weiner's " The Geography of Bliss - One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World", described by the author as "a philosophical humorous travel memoir" was one of my favourites. His quote above is not that far...

Finland has quite a low ratio of inhabitants relative to land mass. Because of this there are vaste uninhabited areas where the landscape remains untouched. In addition, as Finland has very diverse features - ranging from the small islands on the south and southwestern coast, to the thousands of lakes in central Finland, and all the way to the mountains and tundra of Lappland - there are superb possibilities for nature photography. Here are some beautiful pictures of untouched Finnish nature...
