More shameless remarks by Larko -

Related to a discussion about winter weather and road conditions, I searched up a post in this blog a few years back. Embedded in the post is a YouTube video about slippery road conditions in Seattle. The video shows cars bumping into each other as drivers in Seattle are not accustomed to snow and ice […]

When we want to visit our relatives' summer cottage in Virrat , we usually take the bus. If you have the time and if the weather is nice, you should definitely take the 99-year-old steamboat Tarjanne instead. It takes about 6 hours from Tampere to Virrat , but it is worth every minute.

This is brilliant, very creative thinking by the 'Silent Penguin' what could be the businessmodel? The Silent Penguin : "Social Weather 2.0 Here's an idea for a Weather site built around Web 2.0 goodness. There is probably something like this out there already - please let me know if so. Basically the idea hinges around something I read once, that stated the highest chance of forecasting the correct weather for the next day was to say that it would be the same as today. I can't remember where I...

We had a lovely wander in the island park of Seurasaari yesterday, hence I had time to make no new jewellery yesterday. But as nature has been one of my greatest inspirations regarding any activity, the time was quite well enjoyed in many senses. Well, my feet aren't very appreciative. However, here's a double feature regarding summer weather here in the north. Unfortunately the latter has been in short supply this summer. After rain is a middling-length rope made of green keshi, faceted clear...

My So Called Life -

Last time I wrote here I had 3 weeks of summer break left. Now I have 3 days! :D I was supposed to write here earlier, but.. Better late than never. So, about the weekend I told you about in the previous post. I went to the FFfin-meeting and because the weather was pretty nice, warm but bit cloudy and windy, we went to beach. We had pretty fun there. AND after many many many years, I went to swim!!! It was nice :) We were there for few hours and then I headed home and others headed to...

The Venetian Alternative. The current centre-left government of Finland has brought into national focus an ugly beast that has already raised its head globally. The apparent unwillingness to accept change of the noughties is in stark contrast to the breakneck pace of technological development and social change of the 1990's, and indeed the latter half of the 20th century - although I'll have to go by the words of wiser authors on anything preceding the 90's. Are we returning to the same...

The weather is starting to get colder and days are getting shorter, but today was a nice, sunny, almost warm day, so I decided to take advantage of that and cycled to Paukaneva to go for a walk. I was really surprised to see this. The road I needed to take used to go right there where those white things are. First I turned back, but went only about 100 meters or so when I started thinking that there must be a way, so I went to have a closer look. Actually, there is a newer, bigger crossing a...

Been there done that. Well what has happened? I've been in Latvia (yep!) more exactly in Valmiera and Valka - beautiful village of Valka opened it's history slowly to me and I really fell in love with the athmosphere. It was like time captured in past decades. Anyway, I need to go there back most probably I plan for short visit to Border festival in August. Uhh, there was even pensionar who was ready to marry me! Finally I found Latvian groom ;) Since that I met my whole family - relatives at...

Dear readers, after along looong silence, I am back. Having been ill since end of March and having major surgery with it the following convalescence, I have not been much around, just trying to cope with every day life for a long time. Then the heat wave in July mustered the rest of life out of me, and I was trying to cope with accelerating risk of dehydration. My main job seemed to be to

I'm been devouring this incredibly gorgeous book, "Marilyn in Fashion," and feeling so inspired by the sexy, summer-y looks that Marilyn perfected.  I noticed a number of key elements of Marilyn's style: everything fit her body perfectly; her looks are sensual but don't actually show that much skin; and there's a wonderful mix of fresh innocence and sultry sexuality in her personal style. Finding the kind of outfits that Marilyn wore is not easy, and pinup reproduction clothes are so lovely...

What comes to people's minds when they hear about Finland? I don't know, but if they can place it on the map, I guess they think it's so far up North it must be awfully cold all the time, there's loads of snow and ice bears roam the streets of Helsinki. Actually, it isn't as nice as that. Ice bears would perk up the picture (I know they are deadly beasts but they're also so cute, aren't they?). The truth about Helsinki in January is that it's bleak, wet, windy and chilly. The rest of the...

Roundup. Last weekend Jaakko and his family threw up one of the most divine parties in a long time. The word party doesn't do it justice, because it had nothing to do with the usual cityside events, hosted in cramped apartments. It was a festival, in a beautiful garden, a historically laden milieu that was oh-so-fitting for the theme of the occasion, the 1950's. Good food, good drinks, good people - especially the latter. Most participants had really thought out their costumes, giving the...

Listattaessa universaaleimpia puheenaiheita nousee sää - kaikessa banaalisuudessaan - kirkkaasti kärkisijoille. Banaalisuudella en kuitenkaan tässä yhteydessä halua viitata niinkään latteuteen kuin sään jokapäiväisyyteen sanan luonnollisessa mielessä. Sää onkin - latteuksia kuitenkaan millään tavalla karttamatta - monella tavalla osa sitä ilmaa, jota hengitämme, se harmaa arki, joka yhdistää meitä kaikkia ympäri maapallon. Sanakirjoissa sää määritellään...

Ponsa-Pinsiö-Pariisi in a few short days. I was busy for the latter half of last week and couldn't post, as my work took me to the Farmari '03 Agricultural Fair of Finland , in Oulu. I mostly did some reconnaissance work, checking out the competition and talking to potential customers. The weather was tropical, which didn't stop me from joining a few local gay acquaintances (thanks to Matti who'd done some recon of his own a few weeks back) and attending my first-ever 1990's theme party (I dub...

In the world today there is tremendous amount of activity around the subject matter called anthropogenic global warming (AGW). It is claimed, that the human created increase of CO2 in the atmosphere has caused, and will increasingly cause increases in temperatures.

So Friday night I went gambling with my H, mom, dad, and grandma. My dad gave me some money, and so did grandma for gambling. It was a blast. I think the funnest I had was with my dad teaching me the machines. The ONLY time I was really winning anything was with him. When we got there it was stormy, and windy (My kind of weather ;)) We went in, and started playing the slots. I won some cash here, lost some there but was staying pretty balanced. Kuvan tilanne - Situation in the picture : Varisseita lumimarjan ( Symphoricarpos rivularis ) lehtiä ja marjoja käytävällä pensaiden vieressä talon pohjoisseinustalla. Lehdet olivat kuitenkin kiinni tiukasti. Aiheuttaja lienee jokin lintu suurena...

We spent midsummer's night sailing in the Turku Archipelago. Which was great! The sun dipped below the horizon for a short time but still it was pretty light throughout the night. The weather was great, we went swimming every morning and night (from the sauna) and enjoyed great food, even better company and fantastiche scenery for three very relaxing days. Nnnice. Sää oli niin pilvinen ja pimeä, että jouduin tyytymään filminpätkään valokuvien sijaan. Niihin ei vain tuntunut olevan riittävästi valoa. Tuulta oli myös sen verran, että se kuuluu filmillä. The weather was so cloudy and dark, that I had to settle with a short video instead of photos. There just didn't seem to be enough light for them. Wind was blowing strong enough to hear it on the video.

I took a small vacation and flew back home to Finland. When I arrived to the airport it was dark and cold, definitely not anything like in Spain. But my girlfriend was waiting for me and I felt really good being back again. The weather was already getting warmer there and we got many sunny days. One friend had a two months old baby girl and the other kid had grown up and was running around and shouting weird words. Seemed like anywhere we went there were small babies to see. Not much had...

It is ridiculous, really. This whole program, since December 2006, has gone so fast. A little too fast, perhaps. It's funny to think about actually going back to fin land in a couple of weeks. And sad, too. I t hink Sapporo, and my friends I made here, really grew on me. I feel at home. Sumuinen sunnuntai Oslovuonolla. Sumu peitti näkyvistä vastarannan ja ilma tuntui kylmänkostealta. Sumun ja sen yläpuolella paistaneen auringon yhdistelmä sai aikaan mielenkiintoisia sävyjä. A foggy Sunday at the Oslo Fjord. The fog reduced visibility very effectively and the weather felt cold and wet. The combination of fog and sunshine above it created interesting shades of colour.
