When we want to visit our relatives' summer cottage in Virrat , we usually take the bus. If you have the time and if the weather is nice, you should definitely take the 99-year-old steamboat Tarjanne instead. It takes about 6 hours from Tampere to Virrat , but it is worth every minute.

More shameless remarks by Larko -

Related to a discussion about winter weather and road conditions, I searched up a post in this blog a few years back. Embedded in the post is a YouTube video about slippery road conditions in Seattle. The video shows cars bumping into each other as drivers in Seattle are not accustomed to snow and ice […]

My life is full of...? -

Let's get this party started! There are many milestones in our children's lives that we mark with celebration. And there is no better time to celebrate than when your child is taking their first steps into education. Whether you're a stay-at-home mom who's child has been home for the last five years or a mom who works outside the home with a child in daycare, going to school or starting a homeschooling program is going to be a big change in your child's daily life. What better way to get them...

This is brilliant, very creative thinking by the 'Silent Penguin' what could be the businessmodel? The Silent Penguin : "Social Weather 2.0 Here's an idea for a Weather site built around Web 2.0 goodness. There is probably something like this out there already - please let me know if so. Basically the idea hinges around something I read once, that stated the highest chance of forecasting the correct weather for the next day was to say that it would be the same as today. I can't remember where I...

Laura's Wonderland -

Having spent here close to three years now, I have started to appreciate certain aspects of England more than before. Although houses in England are cold and drafty, and I still don't get the idea of having separate faucets for hot and cold water, living in England has its upsides too. The weather isn't definitely as bad as they let you believe. It might be cloudy this time of year but I haven't needed my umbrella in weeks. As the sun starts to come out of the clouds more often these days, it...

Wednesday 4.4. The flu continues. Tuesday 3.4. The flu begins. Monday 2.4. Half an hour trial of cycling in the dark. Nice & not so safe, I guess. Windy, rather cold weather. Sunday 1.4. -24K- 1 h 16 min - Long run. Easy and pleasurable. And yes, the run was shorter than planned... Saturday 31.3. Some "beneficial excercise" like hacking wood etc., no runs. Friday 30.3. - 9K - 45 min - Easy run in the evening. Ache in the head, ache in the muscles, ache in the bones. And some cold, too. It is of...

Good post by Guy, with nice additions by Ronny Ronny Max : "Guy Kawasaki 10/20/30 Rule (And my 100/10/1) As a venture capitalist, Guy Kawasaki had seen a fair share of PowerPoint presentations, hence his 10/20/30 rule: PowerPoint presentation should have ten slides, last no more than twenty minutes, and contain no font smaller than thirty points. Finns Down Under -

I thought I would share a bit of critique I have received from the book. Mainly the critique has been positive. Readers have given positive feedback from the images and the general look of the book. Some people have given thanks for the translations (many children of the first generation immigrants do not have a good grasp of Finnish) and some people have given special thanks for letting the voice of the interviewees to be heard in the text. The voice has also been the most criticized part of...

Ain't talking -

Recently my adopted home country has been pissing me off more and more. The weather is crap, dealing with any government organisation is painful and the small island has been feeling tinier by the day. I'm not one to stay in a crappy situation forever but the issue is where to go from here? The last time I felt like this was nearly ten years ago in Finland. I was so miserable that the decision of leaving was easy. I wanted out and it didn't really matter where to. Now I'm older, more careful...

It's been a busy past few weeks. In addition to trying to finish my PhD, I've also been teaching a couple of courses - one of them some 400 kms from where I live. It was great fun, though, to get an opportunity to take a train to a completely unknown city, stay the night at a fine hotel, talk about literature to  bunch of motivated students, and spend the rest of the time walking around the old part of the city with my mouth hanging slightly open. I hadn't quite realised the Neristan in ...

Minulta kinutaan puhelinnumeroa vähän tästä, minua neuvotaan vaihtamaan selaimeni Google Chromeen koska käyttämääni ei enää tueta, blogiin ympätään yllätyksenä aivan kamala kuvannäyttömikälieomituisuus, eikä blogger millään tunnu tajuavan että saitin omien linkkien tulisi olla englanniksi ei "paikallisella kielellä". This post is going to be in English! Just for the fun of it and more so, because of the loo-oo--ng text I'm enclosing is in English. I have seen the light. I have been inspired. I want to share it with you! Some time ago I got this book recommendation from my brother-in-law. I haven't even finished it yet (I can't wait to get to the "Growth and religion" part!) and still it is mind extending. The book is called The Road Less Travelled and it is written by M. Scott Peck. It is "A new psychology...

What a great waste of time! I’ve been playing chess more or less since the age of five. And now after 32 years when I might win my first tournament, I would be willing to give it all away. I do not think it is just selfish of me to talk about this (now that I might get my first victory) but I’d also like to warn some of my closest and at the same time appraise what a great waste of time chess is.

Fog 1 Fog 2 The photographs were taken on April 30th at lake Kaitalampi in Luukki. The weather continues to be warm and dry, the warmest May in record. The longer-term weather forecast says that there might be some rain in the beginning of June, but that remains to be seen. (Posting title is from the poem The Elements of San Joaquin by Gary Soto.) The title is just a one good piece of an advice I read from the article Never skate with scissors, and other advice for surviving roller derby . The article was a tip I and other new Helsinki Roller Derby 's skaters got when we recieved the email, that we were accepted to the Fresh Meat Training Program after last Sunday's try-outs. I'm becoming a roller derby skater, can you believe it? I still can't! But it will be amazing I'm sure. So far I've attended to an open skate event, an off-skates...

The Sufferfest provides the time-crunched cyclist structured workouts, and integrated training plans for indoor riding. Motivational video footage from grand tours and other races make it feel you're racing with others. The frame story is about Sufferlandrians who refuse to get dropped and who value pain, agony, and misery. This is the pep-talk you better get used to in The Sufferfest. Most of the exercises are short (30-60 minutes) and have a very detailed prescription. The 4DP or...

26.3.2014 Finland. I'm sitting is some completely unrecognisable office cafeteria, in the table next to me someone is pronouncing the names of European cities in a disgustingly Finnish way, the kitchen reminds me of an old school cafeteria.  Finland and the spirit of it is Nokia proudness, bad postures, lifeless lights, juice concentrate, goatees, grey discreet metal eyeglasses, grated carrots, leafless trees in the ruthless and ugly spring light, gravel everywhere, foldaway furniture. A...

On Friday we went to the Imperial Palace in order to visit the Eastern Gardens but they are closed on Mondays and Fridays so we decided to walk around the palace. Over a year ago I met my old school friend by accident. I had not seen her for years, I think it had been like seven years since I had seen her the last time. But there she was, suddenly, in the same train with me. We quickly chatted, shared quick updates about our lives, ans agreed to stay in touch and meet up again. Well. I am not exactly good at organizing things. All I ever want to do is to stay home with my boyfriend. I don't want to go outside my own little home. And she was bad at...
