Oho, eipäs ole hetkeen tullut kirjoitettua mitään.. No, eipä täällä lähiaikoina olekkaan tapahtunut mitään kummallisuuksia. Viime perjantaina kyllästyin kämppisten juoppuiluun ja yrjönkadun ainaiseen meteliin ja otin taksin North Rydeen moikkaamaan Philiä ja Johnia. Yksi elokuva vaihtui seuraavaan ja lyhyeksi tarkoitettu visiitti muuttui viikonloppulomaksi poikien hoellihuoneessa. Lauantaina hyvin nukutun yön jälkeen heräiltiin hotelliaamiaisen suhteen ihan liian […]

Johan Norberg asks in his weblog is the Left nothing but a negation? He quotes a Swedish left-wing site: "Unfortunately parts of the right do not seem to understand that large parts of the left define their own policy as a negation of the right, and the left therefore becomes more anti-Semitic if the right tries to simplify the issue about anti-Semitism into a question about liberal vs extreme left." As Friedrich A. Hayek, nowadays also claimed by many conservatives as one of theirs, wrote in...

As the editor of the English categories Liberalism and Libertarianism of the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) , to which among others the Google Directory is based on, I frequently receive feedback from American libertarians complaining, that libertarianism should not be classified as a subcategory of liberalism. The historical reasons why libertarianism is listed under liberalism are summarised here , but as I noticed that in the Globalization Institute Blog there were an article by Alex...

Esimerkiksi seuraavissa osoitteissa on nähtävillä kiusoittelevan paljon ihania vaatteita: Columbia Esprit Haglöfs Peak Performance The North Face Ja tällaisiin maisemiin kun joskus...

Roundup. Last weekend Jaakko and his family threw up one of the most divine parties in a long time. The word party doesn't do it justice, because it had nothing to do with the usual cityside events, hosted in cramped apartments. It was a festival, in a beautiful garden, a historically laden milieu that was oh-so-fitting for the theme of the occasion, the 1950's. Good food, good drinks, good people - especially the latter. Most participants had really thought out their costumes, giving the...

There are many theories about where golf was born. It's widely accepted that the modern game was developed and popularised by the Scots, but it is often claimed that the initial roots of the game can be traced to continental Europe. For example the Dutch game of "kolven" involved crooked wooden sticks and balls, but it was still very far from our game. Anyway, why am I saying all this? Probably just to highlight that, despite that the history of our game is attributed to Scotland and the fact...

On Sunday, I decided to go out, although weather was really foggy and a bit damp. I wanted to test the elevation measuring in the GPS device, so I headed to the highest hill around, Jouppilanvuori. It's a man made hill and is a downhill skiing center in winter. There is a proper road to the top on the other side, but I decided to take the footpath on the north side, which I hadn't checked before. You can see it in the photo, going right in front of the tall fir trees. This is the back side of...

I have been using a Sigma 800 odometer for measuring cycling distances and an Excel table to keep track of them plus maximum and average speeds. However, there is a device that can do all that and more automatically and it's called Garmin Edge 200. It's a GPS device that records speed, distance, average speed, maximum speed and changes in elevation while also keeping track of your route. When you upload the data to the Garmin Connect site, you can view your route on a map or a satellite photo...

76. kirjastoalan IFLA-konferenssi järjestettiin Göteborgissa 10. - 15.8.2010 (IFLA = International Federation of Library Associations). Tapahtuman teema oli “Open access to knowledge - promoting sustainable progress”.

Royal Oostende is the second of the Belgian links courses. Hmm. It does not actually sound good to call it "second". It is actually the first by many attributes. Driving South-West from Zoute, you'll find your way to Royal Oostende automatically. The course is located by the main road, right by the sea. If Royal Zoute is somewhere between links and heathland (see entry below), Oostende has a much more a links character, with most holes being clearly links holes, topped up with five holes cut...

Wow.. it has been a long time since I wrote here last time. Heh, it's a bit funny that I wrote earlier that I will write here maybe twice a month. Huh, that just ain't gonna work. I realized that I am living here on Pulau Penang just an ordinary life. Nothing very special is going to happen that often. So I decided to forget this blog for a while. But now I am back. Why? Probably because I felt like writing something up again. I just felt like gathering my memories here a little bit. The thing...

There have been many library closures in the UK and North America recently. Meanwhile South Korea is opening new ones. What's going on? Are public libraries obsolete? I wrote an article about this topic at Blogcritics and would love it...

Rioters have taken to the streets of Paris once more, reminding us of the massive rioting that took place only last fall. The BBC reports: Paris suburb sees fresh rioting The mayor's house is now under police guard following the riotingAbout 100 youths wielding baseball bats have fought French police in a Paris suburb, in the worst such violence since widespread riots in November. The youths threw stones and petrol bombs at police in the town of Montfermeil overnight. They also hurled stones at...

Hello everybody! It's been now a while I wrote here last time. But I have a very good excuse. I have been busy! This post will be my last one considering my journeys in Southeast Asia. I hope you have liked to read these stories. I can tell you that this time what I spent in SE Asia has been more perfect, more beautiful and totally more exciting that I could have ever imagined. It was great time I had there but now it's time to look forward again. I have started to work in a finnish company and...

What comes to people's minds when they hear about Finland? I don't know, but if they can place it on the map, I guess they think it's so far up North it must be awfully cold all the time, there's loads of snow and ice bears roam the streets of Helsinki. Actually, it isn't as nice as that. Ice bears would perk up the picture (I know they are deadly beasts but they're also so cute, aren't they?). The truth about Helsinki in January is that it's bleak, wet, windy and chilly. The rest of the...

My dream came true and I finally learned how to spin on a spinning wheel. It´s not like I haven´t spun before, I used to spin on the drop spindle (since spring 2009 when I learned how to) and have not been able to make yarn on the spinning wheel even if I tried it out many times. Why? I honestly don´t know. Maybe it was the fact that when spinning on the wheel you have to coordinate both feet and hands (and brains!) and that was too much... Anyhow, My first made yarn in the picture above...

According to the south-Swedish newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad , Sverigedemokraterna is popular among youth , or, as the researcher suggets, it might just be a sign of teenage rebellion. Here are some excerpts from the article: "Every other ninth-grader does not know what party they would vote for in the parliamentary elections, or if they would vote at all, shows the extensive opinion research. At the same time the Sweden Democrats are enjoying great support. They became the most popular party...

Good links golf tends to be expensive. Therefore, have you ever wondered if there exists a links course that 1) is not tucked away in the furthest corner of the country, 2) is in pristine condition all year round, 3) is challenging and quirky, 4) has a really friendly atmosphere and 5) has a green fee of less than 30€? Corballis has it all. Corballis links is literally next door to The Island golf club, in Donabate, just north of Dublin city. It's a public links course, and a really popular...

Mirrorball in Flames -

This is a meaningful way to begin something new. Some seem to have an intuition that excessive freedom of a human being results in deaths and misery; own, or those of others. Such freedom rarely goes by the name of liberty. I shall paint the devil on the wall (a Finnish saying, which refers to being too hasty to presume something bad and, as a consequence, asking for it to happen), and it may be that I like what I see. The lonely figure of a wolf intrigues most of us. In Europe it has been...

From the corner of the world -

It's been a long time since I last wrote here. Nothing new, it's a very dark time of the year here in the Northern hemisphere. Personally I'm just waiting for the days to get longer, for the sun to shine more. Right now it's really dark although the meteorologists claim the day is getting longer and brighter all the time. I guess living up here in the North, you create a certain skill of utilizing and stocking up some solar energy in your body during the summer months and then automatically...

This was my fourth and last burger with a journalist from Helsingin Sanomat. He's making a story about hamburgers and I was interviewed for the article while tasting several burgers. In the 90's there were three big burger chains in Finland - McDonalds, Carrols and Hesburger. Two of these were original US based burger chains. You know the McDonals but also Carrols originally came to Finland as a franchise from the United States. Carrols Corporation was found in Syracusa NY, and during the 60's...

Viikonlopun FA Cupin ottelussa tapahtui ikävä asia. Kansallisen cup-kilpailun 6. kierroksella, White Hart Lanella pelatussa iltaottelussa, Boltonin pelaaja Fabrice Muamba lyhistyi maahan. Muamba sai sydänkohtauksen kesken ottelun. Boltonin keskikenttäpelaaja vietiin Lontoon Chest Hospitaliin. Katsomossa sattui olemaan paikalla sydänspesialisti, joka ohjasi lääkintähenkilökunnan & ensihoitajat viemään Fabrice Muamban edellä mainittuun sairaalaan. North Middlesexin sairaala olisi...

Since I seem to be unable to write anything with actual content here, I'll just fill this 1. What music am I listening just now or listened to most recently? I listened Rimfaxe by Gjallarhorn yesterday on my way to town and back. It was pretty good. Although I guess I liked the previous albums more. They're also pretty good live. 2. What music did I buy most recently? I bought the intro music to North by Northwest by Bernard Herrmann. I was watching Prison Break and in it this guy goes running...

Heterowife-swapping and orgies are so 2005. If you want real action, you need to get down to the UK's hardest underground gay sex clubs. Warning: this ain't pretty... When you're looking for the most extreme sex club in the country, when do you call off the search? After the HIV+ barebacking night? When someone starts drinking a stranger's piss for fun? Or do you wait until a man's screams are drowning out the music at a fisting night? Over the last couple of months, many of you have responded...

Blue swap had been looking awful for some time now . I did planned to change it last autumn , but the snow came and buried the entire thing . Now I finally replaced it . So still at the bus stop at Hervannan valtaväylä, name of the stop is...
