Inside the Bannus Field -

Last year I read less books than I wanted. I had my goal set on 100 books, at least, a figure I usually reach very easily. This year had a lot of other stuff that took my time and concentration away from reading, but I still read several very good books. Some statistical data: 87 works read, 74 in English, 11 in Finnish, and 2 in Swedish. 32 of them were e-books and 10 were graphic novels. View Poll: Books 2015

I've been feeling for a while now that I could begin writing about books again, so what better way to start than to comment on the best reads of 2014. I'm not going to do any numbered listing, just comment on the most memorable reads with some silly categories. Best YA Janni Lee Simner's Bones of Faerie (reread) and Faerie Winter Set in a postacopalyptic world where a war between humans and faerie damaged both worlds, and left wild magic among humans. A young girl set out to find her mother...

I haven't been active in updating this journal for a while now. I guess at some point a few years ago, I just got burned out on reviewing and writing in general after having done that very actively for several years. It also didn't help that much of fandom moved over to Tumblr etc. which is just not suited for long text comments or in-depth analysis of books/tv/movies/whatever. This year I decided to try to revive this journal a bit and at least try to make monthly book/media comments which...

February was a much slower reading month than January, mostly because the book I read or was reading didn't grab me that much, or in one case I'm still slowly reading and savouring a book that I'll probably finish this month. 16. Ekaterina Sedia: The Secret History of Moscow This book is set in Moscow in the 1990s, where people are suddenly turning into birds. A small group sets to investigate this mystery and to find one woman's missing sister. During their investigation, they find an...

Another attempt at monthly updates. I'm actually at a great reading mode this year. 75 books by the end of Junes, so I might even reach 140-150 by the end of the year. But that always depends on the reading, since some books take more time and effort than others. 66. P. N. Elrod (ed.): Hex Appeal and 67. Paula Guran (ed.): Vampires: The Recent Undead Ok theme anthologies, with some better stories and some not-so-good stories. 68. Johanna Sinisalo: Auringon ydin Mielenkiintoinen kertomus...

Heh, well, looks like my good intentions of updating more often this year didn't actually work out. I really need to work on that. But that hasn't stopped me from reading and I'm well on track on my goal of reading at least 100 books this year. However, since I'm at about 65 books now, I just can't be bothered to talk about all the books I've read, so I decided to go for a 'best of' -option. :) 20. Mia Kankimäki: Asioita jotka saavat sydämen lyömään nopeammin (non-fiction) Kankimäen...

Last time I wrote here I had 3 weeks of summer break left. Now I have 3 days! :D I was supposed to write here earlier, but.. Better late than never. So, about the weekend I told you about in the previous post. I went to the FFfin-meeting and because the weather was pretty nice, warm but bit cloudy and windy, we went to beach. We had pretty fun there. AND after many many many years, I went to swim!!! It was nice :) We were there for few hours and then I headed home and others headed to...

We have a visitor. His name is Kassu and the happy owner of him is Tuula, who's living in the building next to us. She went to help her daughter with moving, so we eagerly welcomed Kassu to stay a couple of days with us. He's already taken over this place by sleeping in every corner of this flat! He also came to wake me up at 5am, 6am, 7am and finally at 8am I woke and gave up. He also escaped once from the balcony, but he's a shy boy and was waiting for us to carry him inside just outside the...

three years ago i was quite in tune with my inner bookworm judging from a little note i wrote about admiration . nevertheless, being the one-click addict that i am, my amazon shipments have lately included a couple of memoirs – literature i knew to steer clear of before. judging from how i feel right now, i probably should have kept on avoiding them. since i never really discuss books here, this may seem an odd way to start – although i am not promising any continuance – but here goes...

This is a meaningful way to begin something new. Some seem to have an intuition that excessive freedom of a human being results in deaths and misery; own, or those of others. Such freedom rarely goes by the name of liberty. I shall paint the devil on the wall (a Finnish saying, which refers to being too hasty to presume something bad and, as a consequence, asking for it to happen), and it may be that I like what I see. The lonely figure of a wolf intrigues most of us. In Europe it has been...

My So Called Life -

So, my nephew had to stay in hospital and I headed back to home for two days. Today I came to Kuopio with my parents because of family reunion. Here was about 20 people. Some of them were new faces to me. We had nice time for few hours but now almost everyone has left away. Only those who stay at this camping site are here. This camping site is very nice but not as nice as the one where we were last summer. But this time we have cabin with own beach, row boat and sauna. We're gonna stay here...

This week has been bit Harry Potterish week. On Monday I started to re-read the Half-Blood Prince, got it finished yesterday. And today, I went to see it as a movie. And I gotta say that I really did enjoy the movie and loved it and all. It did have few changes and some added scenes that weren't in the book, but I still did like it. I have already accepted the fact that if movie is based on book, the movie can't be just like the book. Some parts must be left away and some parts must change...

July wasn't a great reading month, but it's Summer, there's so much other stuff to do in addition to reading. 76. 77.- 78. Children's residence permits finally came through a couple of weeks ago- after six months of bureacracy. The long way to the migration office became very familiar for me during that time. Every time I thought I had all the required papers they told me I need something more, and usually something that was quite hard to get. When I got the notice that they are ready and I can collect them from the bank, a new circle of bureaucracy began: I had to proove in strange ways that I really am their...

Sosiaalinen media mahdollistaa uusia tapoja innostua kirjoista toisten kirjanystävien kanssa. Esimerkiksi Instagramiin on muodostunut alati kasvava kirjaintoilijoiden joukko, jotka ottavat tileilleen kuvia ainoastaan kirjoista. Ilmiötä kutsutaan käsitteellä bookstagram.

I thought about that I do not write on my blog before we get a new traffic sign in Haaga, but then I decided against it. I realized that it will take as long as I predicted. And if I do not write, no one would read this. So let’s write. Jukka got a challenge from a friend of his, it is a book challenge in which you have to name a list of books. After you have explained why these books are important to you, you can challenge five persons to this challenge. Even though it would be extremely...

well, i didnt know Noam Chomsky was banned from entering Israel. makes sense now that I read more about what he's said. not that it's so radical, but Israel is so sensitive. i stopped over at the nearby 2nd hand bookshop but it's always dangerous. i spent an hour there and went a bit overboard perhaps. got 2 smaller books for doctor; Chomsky's On Anarchism and a Graphic Guide to Sartre. and for myself i seem to have decided to take up latin again (cos unsurprisingly you forget a language if you...

It's been a busy past few weeks. In addition to trying to finish my PhD, I've also been teaching a couple of courses - one of them some 400 kms from where I live. It was great fun, though, to get an opportunity to take a train to a completely unknown city, stay the night at a fine hotel, talk about literature to  bunch of motivated students, and spend the rest of the time walking around the old part of the city with my mouth hanging slightly open. I hadn't quite realised the Neristan in ...

The crowd-funded Atelieri O.Haapala book is finally here and it is so beautiful I almost want to cry! The bi-lingual book -the texts are both in Finnish and English- features the studio's portraits and distinctive style of photography from the last decade (the studio/project was active 2008-2016 and produced more than 7000 portraits),  taking you on a journey trough an imaginary past: Performers, artists, family portraits, guests at events who photographed themselves in the popup photo booth...

Has anyone read Fast Strategy by Yves Doz and Mikko Kosonen? Review of it in Amazon is promising: In their Introduction, Yves Doz and Mikko Kosonen assert that strategically agile companies "not only learn to make fast turns and transform themselves without losing momentum but their CEOs and top teams also have higher ambitions: to make their companies permanently, regularly, able to take advantage of change and disruption. They want their organizations to learn to thrive on continuous waves of...

Meant to write something about SKI on Troughput blog allready some time ago, but forgot about it. Now it popped up again from my Google Alerts. Catching a cold seriously affeted my knitting last weekend, as I lacked the energy for anything too demanding. My eyes also seemed to protest at my continuous small-gauge knitting, so my wollmeise socks were in hibernation for a few days. So no socks to present yet. Instead of FOs, I can offer a book recommendation: Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell. I read it in print but I imagine that it would be the most suitable book to listen to while knitting. It is a novel, but very episodic: therefore it...
