Another Russian revealing dirty secrets believed to be in danger is Anna Bukovskaya. I have met several activists of "The Other Russia", the political opposition, and they have all said they phone calls are being listened to, and they are being followed. But I have not realised also kids can act as agents. Nashi Activist Tells of Snooping for Kremlin 06 February 2009 By Natalya Krainova / Staff Writer Undercover pro-Kremlin agents have worked in opposition groups across Russia to provide the...

Holocaust memorial day. The Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liberated 60 years ago today. In Finland, the day is held to remember not only the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, but all victims of ethnic persecution, past and present. The simple popular picture of the reasons for the Holocaust has two essential elements: an insane leadership that whipped up antisemitism to gain power, and fanatically loyal followers who were indoctrinated into totalitarian mentality, ready to obey any and all...

As part of NASPIR , I've signed a letter defending free speech in the case of Ward Churchill, a professor at the University of Colorado. Churchill wrote what he called "a stream-of-consciousness interpretive reaction to the September 11 counterattack" in the immediate aftermath of said event. The rediscovery of this sloppy polemic has led to raging denunciation, with death threats, the governor of Colorado calling for Churchill's resignation and so on. The issue of most interest to corporate...

Lavrenti Beriya (1899–1953). Originally Georgian. At the highest times of his glory Stalin's right hand, head of the KGB. After getting rid of his predecessor Yezhov (killing him in Lubyanka, the KGB prison in Moscow), Beriya was responsible for the deportations from the Baltic states, among other things. Politkovskaya's assassination is still badly investigated and therefore, of course, the murderer unpunished. But, like almost everybody who have been following this, I am very sure the...

"Any Arab who doesn't leave here voluntarily should be killed," she says in reply to a question with a pleasant smile, without batting an eyelash. The quote is from a member of the Kahane youth , an Israeli extremist movement, interviewed in Haaretz. Not all members are as strong in their views. Some want to give the Palestinians a chance: "[I]f we don't deal with the Arabs now, they will liquidate us and take over our country democratically. They will change our flag and our national anthem."...

Arrests. Threats. Raided offices and confiscated computers. A closed court case with activities surrounding it strongly implying there is no way the accused will be treated fairly. The police and the authorities not respecting the rule of law. And all this has to do with Chechnya again, though surprisingly not in Russia but in the European Union. The following is written for the European Court by the Lithuanian Human Rights workers. Best of luck to you and your case! As for the kids in the...

Hi! I'm still alive. :P My iPhone is not working. ;_____; (I've been using my mother's Nokia.) I REEEALLY want to buy iPhone 5C, but it's not being sold in Finland any time soon. I'm going to Copenhagen on thursday. I wish they have Matcha Frapuccinos in Starbucks, because I really wanted one in Frankfurt but I was so full I couldn't drink one. (In other news, Finland is getting it's second Starbucks soon!) I'm really waiting few restaurants, like a sushi place, which is near our hotel, a...

Today is going to be just meager commentary on certain interesting news items with no real snark directed at the paper itself. I know, disappointing, isn't it. But even I must rest sometimes. The latest fad with regard to future development of the town seems to be floating houses, planned on the mouth of the river running through the town. Both the planned areas seem to be meant for the more wealthy folk, which appaears to be the case with most new developments. Fancy buildings put up with...

Newsweek reports that the US government is debating the "Salvador option" in Iraq: creating death squads in the style of El Salvador and other US client states in Latin America. This would be a logical development. The occupation is failing ever more rapidly, and at this point it seems unlikely that conventional military force can defeat the Iraqi resistance. The great foreign policy successes of the US have not been in colonial war as in Vietnam, but in neo-colonial state terror as in Latin...

"In Bhutan, chilli is not a spice. It is a vegetable." These were some of the wise words I was told during the flash introduction to culture, security and practical issues in Bhutan by the UN security officer during my first week. Since then, I have been asked the question "how are you coping with the food here?" in a worried tone, as not everyone is as fond of chillies in every single dish as the Bhutanese are. Selection of Bhutanese dishes at the Folk Heritage Museum restaurant. Chilli sauce...

Tell them to let our people go To all: By now you’ve no doubt heard the news about Hillary’s people defining the about to take off Gaza flotilla as a “provacative act”! Could Obama be getting a bit nervous that he might have to take a stand? He may be nervous but not as much as the Israeli government that is throwing everything in the book at them to prevent them from even leaving the shores. Below is a partial dialogue from the State Dept. press conference where Matt Lee of the AP was...

Christmas, the most commercial religious holiday of all is approaching. One might think that the materialistic, carnevalistic celebration of religious holidays would not have reached Bhutan yet – wrong. The two tsechu s, religious festivals I have testified in Thimphu, the capital and in Bumthang, Central Bhutan have had a vast selection of attractions outside the official programme of sacred dances ( cham ): gambling, drinking, dancing girls...you know, the usual things you would associate...

Bhutanese people often ask how do I like Bhutan, adding that "it must be very different from your country".  Actually, in many ways, it isn't.  Just to name a few common things between Finland and Bhutan:  Forest coverage in Finland: 78 %, in Bhutan: 72 % People are modest and don't like bragging about themselves Showing emotions is not common, and talking about them is even less common And finally, alcohol consumption is high (highest in South Asia), and the people who drink, drink a lot...

Dili Days Decrease -

I haven't been updating my blog properly for a while, so I haven't reported that it was not only Dili in turmoil, but we had some terrifying incidents here in Helsinki too. These things happened around 1st of May celebrations, which are a really big thing here, but I missed them this year because of an irritating deadline for a conference paper, set very untoughtfully to 1st of May (no cultural sensitivity there!). Robin has been covering both Dili and Helsinki incidents in his blog, so look...

An MP has very nearly talked himself into supporting today's "Perverts Wear Purple" day - by accident. And it could hardly have happened to a less likely politician: Ronnie Campbell, one of the most down-to-earth and decent men in the Commons. The 64-year-old former miner and Labour Member of Parliament for Blyth Valley was approached and asked to wear something purple to support National Fetish Day. He said he would wear a purple shirt. Unfortunately, no one had told Ronnie what the word...

This was my second burger with a journalist from Helsingin Sanomat. He's making a story about hamburgers and I was interviewed for the article while tasting several burgers. Harrin nakki (Harri's Hotdog) is a typical Finnish grill kiosk. A little booth standing in the corner of local park in the middle of Helsinki. Back in the days the architecture varied from trailers to wooden booths but the city of Helsinki standardized the outlook of these kiosks a few years back. This particular kiosk has...

International Cricket Captain 2011 doesn't break any new ground, but a wealth of real-life statistics married to a solid management sim makes it worth the investment for any budding cricket captains. The Good Good statistical realism   Well-balanced difficulty. The Bad For diehards only   Flat graphical presentation. UK REVIEW--Few genres cater so directly to a specific crowd as the management sim. Incredibly dense minutiae are a sim's lifeblood, and International Cricket Captain 2011 serves...

Since I am no longer in Dili, I was going to end writing this blog and start a new one with a more accurate tile. However, the title words have got a whole new meaning now, so I continue with that for time being. Despite the reports, I remained confident that the situation would normalise soon until last Thursday when...

Noin tuli matkat purettua. Shanghaissa keli on pysynyt lämpimänä, mutta muuttunut varsin sateiseksi. Pahus.
