Inside the Bannus Field -

Another attempt at monthly updates. I'm actually at a great reading mode this year. 75 books by the end of Junes, so I might even reach 140-150 by the end of the year. But that always depends on the reading, since some books take more time and effort than others. 66. P. N. Elrod (ed.): Hex Appeal and 67. Paula Guran (ed.): Vampires: The Recent Undead Ok theme anthologies, with some better stories and some not-so-good stories. 68. Johanna Sinisalo: Auringon ydin Mielenkiintoinen kertomus...

Heh, well, looks like my good intentions of updating more often this year didn't actually work out. I really need to work on that. But that hasn't stopped me from reading and I'm well on track on my goal of reading at least 100 books this year. However, since I'm at about 65 books now, I just can't be bothered to talk about all the books I've read, so I decided to go for a 'best of' -option. :) 20. Mia Kankimäki: Asioita jotka saavat sydämen lyömään nopeammin (non-fiction) Kankimäen...

Beautiful china and fragrant tea ... always a good recipe for some me-time, also mindfulness. I could not make just one card, the theme was just too delicious. Background was first stamped, them sprayed with shimmery baby blue mist through a stencil. The wooden elements, arrow, heart and #-sign were treated with a multi tone embossing powder with delicious detail. The wording was made with ancient rub-on letters that were last around in the 90's.  1 - 2 -tea... The background paper is ancient...

I decided to play with my paints and make something mixed media. The substrate is a piece of packaging cardboard. I always use the printed side after I have taken a piece of sandpaper to it. The paint just sticks better if the surface is not too slick. I dabbed on a lot of brown paint, smeared it with a palette knife and while it was still wet, took a rubber stamp and printed onto the paint with no color. When the stamp came off so did most of the paint - leaving me with a nice impression. The...

Is it weird to build your card around enamel dots? As I browsed through the challenges, it was 'Enamel dots' that caught my attention. I have them, plenty, but I never use them. Today was the day! The background was treated with Distress oxides. I added bees that I had stamped on tissue paper. entering in: Simon Says Wednesday Challenge: Anything goes Use Your Stuff: Enamel dots Fashionable Stamping Challenge: Anything goes

The title refers to resist technique. I wanted to find out a new way - new to me anyway - to use resist technique, so I thought of crackle medium. I put a thin layer of gesso on brown cardstock. After it was dry I brushed crackle paste through a stencil. I was going for a historical look, so the new TH stencil with the Maltese cross was just perfect. After it was dry came the fun part. I treated the background with Oxide ink (lavender), waited till it was dry and sprayed with a sapphire blue...

This somewhat moody card was inspired by two challenges. The background has paper with numbers and there is a top layer of a flowery tissue on the right. entering in: Ftilly and Funkie: Pass the tissues, please! Continue reading →

OKTK -haaste on uudistunut.

Bugs are so misunderstood. No, I don't like bugs either... even a bee gives me the creeps. (Sorry bee, I know your work is valuable, but I hate it if our interests collide - e.g. in ice-cream...) If you stay with flowers we'll get along just famously. The bee and floweri are stamped. Bee's wings have a blue iridescent powder on them. Background is magazine clippings that were sandpapered and inked. entering in: Fashionable Stamping: It's a bug's life Simon Says Wednesday Challenge:  Stamp on it

Simon Says challenge on Monday asks to recycle something . Blue is my favorite color. For this background I used a wild concoction. First TH Distress inks in Broken china and Pumice stone (turq and sage).  When that was dry I slightly went over the base with sandpaper to create fine lines. Then I blended two Oxides, Tumbled Glass and Shaded lilac (turq and lavender) which created a lovely soft sky blue. I don't own all colors so I need to be creative with what I've got. I also used some glitter - there has to be glitter - and white papers for snow...

I love using book paper, it gives such nice character to backgrounds. Even if it is totally unrelated, like here. I went with the book theme and selected 'short story' as my title. You can make up your own story - it is fall, she looks determined, there's a shiny bough in her arm - enough said. The leaves are die-cut and embossed. I highlighted the veins with some Distress ink. entering in: Paperminutes: #562 Buchseiten / Book pages Frilly and Funkie: Impress us! SimonSays Wednesday: Anything...

OKTK mixedmediahaasteen uusi kierros avautui juuri. Hakaneulaa pitää käyttää kiinnittämään kahta asiaa toisiinsa. Tausta on Timpan painettua voipaperia jonka ruiskin erilaisilla musteilla. The background is TH printed tissue paper which I sprayed with several colors, including pink so it would tie in with the images. Fall brings out the saturated colors: yellows, oranges and browns and inky blue night skies. I made a group of mixed media atc's. They all started as cereal boxes which were cut to size and sandpapered. The first one received butterfly and swirl diecuts. Then I painted everything over with light acrylic and treated with stamping, stenciling and so forth. The others were just stenciled and then treated like the first, with a focal image on separate paper, stamped with tiny text, post mark and...

Making my own backgrounds is something I have done since the beginning of this blog (back in 2007). The possibilities are endless and the results are never the same. This week, prompted by a challenge that asked to use playing cards, I started by glueing playing cards onto card bases. Next I dabbed white chalk paint through a stencil. It dried matte white over a somewhat shiny yellowed base - a very nice look I thought. I decorated along the edges with matching red and black tissue tapes, then...

Yesterday's card already had stamping on tissue. Today I'd like to show you my step-by-step for this method. Not that it hasn't been around, and tehere is printed tissue to be bought as well. But it is fun to make your own. I started with very thin tissue, the kind that can be found in shoe boxes. For this type I wanted the tissue to be extremely thin, because next I was going to glue it onto patterned paper. The good thing about this is that you can flip sides. The stamping doe not have to go...

I haven't been active in updating this journal for a while now. I guess at some point a few years ago, I just got burned out on reviewing and writing in general after having done that very actively for several years. It also didn't help that much of fandom moved over to Tumblr etc. which is just not suited for long text comments or in-depth analysis of books/tv/movies/whatever. This year I decided to try to revive this journal a bit and at least try to make monthly book/media comments which...

February was a much slower reading month than January, mostly because the book I read or was reading didn't grab me that much, or in one case I'm still slowly reading and savouring a book that I'll probably finish this month. 16.

Last year I read less books than I wanted. I had my goal set on 100 books, at least, a figure I usually reach very easily. This year had a lot of other stuff that took my time and concentration away from reading, but I still read several very good books. Some statistical data: 87 works read, 74 in English, 11 in Finnish, and 2 in Swedish. 32 of them were e-books and 10 were graphic novels. View Poll: Books 2015

I've been feeling for a while now that I could begin writing about books again, so what better way to start than to comment on the best reads of 2014. I'm not going to do any numbered listing, just comment on the most memorable reads with some silly categories. Another week has passed, and I've still enjoyed this new lifestyle. I've always been an avid reader (ever since childhood - our parents read a lot to us, and I learned how to myself already when I was 3!), but after youth it's been difficult to find enough time to read books. When I was in University, I felt "reading-tired" after so much academical non-fiction, and preferred newspapers and
