Love is... a wagging tail -

Another day of rain. The rainy autumn season has really begun now. When you go out in the morning you never really know how the weather will be like in the afternoon and of course if you take the umbrella with you it never rains, but if you choose to leave it home, you can […]

Christmas, the most commercial religious holiday of all is approaching. One might think that the materialistic, carnevalistic celebration of religious holidays would not have reached Bhutan yet – wrong. The two tsechu s, religious festivals I have testified in Thimphu, the capital and in Bumthang, Central Bhutan have had a vast selection of attractions outside the official programme of sacred dances ( cham ): gambling, drinking, dancing girls...you know, the usual things you would associate...

This can probably happen only in a Brazil; Mulher Melancia (Watermelon Woman), the dancer with an enourmous ass who became famous of performing all 5 speeds of Dança do Créu on MC Créu's stage shows is actually become a bigger star than Créu himself. While the MC with the 2007/2008 biggest hit hasn't been able to follow up the success, Mulher Melancia (Andressa Soares is her real name by the way) is constantly gaining new admirerers of her "skills". She launched her independent singing...

The Venetian Alternative. The current centre-left government of Finland has brought into national focus an ugly beast that has already raised its head globally. The apparent unwillingness to accept change of the noughties is in stark contrast to the breakneck pace of technological development and social change of the 1990's, and indeed the latter half of the 20th century - although I'll have to go by the words of wiser authors on anything preceding the 90's. Are we returning to the same...

This post tries to briefly explain the little known various styles of Bhutanese music which you can hear blasting from the local radio stations every day. Religious music is in a category of its own, with sacred dances and monastery music - here I will only focus on folk and popular music. B-pop Starting with the newest form: B-pop , a style "invented" by a local music studio in Thimphu called M-Studio . They have produced several hits during their few years of existence, most famously...

my trip last fall via reykjavik was filled with music. the airwaves festival is such a cornucopia of music that the overlapping shows have you first devastated: you find yourself standing in line for phantogram and patrick wolf while you know you're missing out on some other great name. later on it is a relief to realize that just sitting down, sipping a beer anywhere in the city offers something great to listen to. even the off-venue program is so extensive that your brain will be intoxicated...

three years ago i was quite in tune with my inner bookworm judging from a little note i wrote about admiration . nevertheless, being the one-click addict that i am, my amazon shipments have lately included a couple of memoirs – literature i knew to steer clear of before. judging from how i feel right now, i probably should have kept on avoiding them. since i never really discuss books here, this may seem an odd way to start – although i am not promising any continuance – but here goes...

Been there done that. Well what has happened? I've been in Latvia (yep!) more exactly in Valmiera and Valka - beautiful village of Valka opened it's history slowly to me and I really fell in love with the athmosphere. It was like time captured in past decades. Anyway, I need to go there back most probably I plan for short visit to Border festival in August. Uhh, there was even pensionar who was ready to marry me! Finally I found Latvian groom ;) Since that I met my whole family - relatives at...

Making Indigoflood's Rats and Hatchets -

So we got back to business on the 21st of May. We were supposed to start the wednesday evening before, but Sami got busy, so the plan was changed. We ended up cleaning the bands practise room on wednesday and kicking back a couple of brews. This time the original plan was to do the guitars at the bands practise room anyhow, so it was easier to just stay there for the night. Sami came from Vantaa bright and early, and we kicked ourselves up at about the time he arrived, so it was straight to...

Mental Asylum -

Okay. It was amazing. Tenor soloist was slightly weak, and soprano was somehow very typical soprano, compared to the alto and bass. Orchestra was way better than I expected! Choir did mostly amazing work! In the end of the project, Mozart-obsession bit me too, and I started to get really annoyed with altos who didn't know how to sing like they meant it! Especially some of the altos in the other choir we did this with. They sung piano too loud, especially pianissimo sempre or sotto voce, and...

I think I don't have much to say in this journal anymore. Or in any other journal for that matter. I feel like I have just stopped fighting against the current and drifted away from some people. Maybe I never really knew them in the first place - or they knew me. I grew tired to the feeling of not being there like everyone else was. Not being cared in the same way. Not worthwhile. I think I have changed otherise as well. Perhaps it was time for that. --- I love singing. I'm getting better in...

Do You Hear the People Sing? -

Minulla on tiedossa kiireinen vuosi. On näköjään pakko ehtiä myös Irlantiin lokakuun lopussa. Jesus Christ Superstar! Steve Balsamo! Steve is singing the part of Jesus! Argh! I MUST attend! I've only been reminiscing about the original performance for 12 years. Why does the world force me to spend ALL my money on plane tickets? And more importantly, anyone want to go to Dublin with me at the end of October? Jesus Christ Superstar Concert, Dublin 2 nights only! Location:National Concert...

It's a kaisaful life -

My current contract ends in the end of November. Again, I have to start looking for work... OR again I have the opportunity to be inspired by something new and start afresh. It feels SO exciting to be moving forward and at the same time SO daunting to have to go through the self-selling process again. It's always the same dilema : need to make money but want to be happy and inspired too. Want security but also want freedom and space for creativity. Below I have randomly listed a few things that...

I guess it was a couple of years ago when i somehow got the idea that i need to get to know Caroliner. I had heard about some mysterious cult band called Caroliner Rainbow, who were playing some weird music in San Francisco, but i never saw their records anywhere and never heard any of their music so i just forgot about it. But somehow the idea of this band started to haunt me. I read some descriptions about their vinyl-only albums from the internet, and got the idea that this band is...

Making Indigoflood's Rats and Hatchets -

So finally we had the second session for the album on last Saturday. This time we did vocals and rest of the guitars for the three songs we started last time. The tunes are Terra Fungus, Kutteri and Rats and Hatchets (or Hats and Ratchets, I never remember which way it is with the song). We started a little after twelve and got done at around six, so everything was done fairly fast. First of we handled the rest of Tero's guitars. Those got done real fast, even before Peb got to the studio...

I need to tell you something about myself and I figured this would be one way of doing it. If it bores you to death, move on. Usually I wake up sometime between 6 and 7 a.m. unless I need to sleep in. Saturdays and Sundays I often get to sleep until 8 but then my 4-year-old son wakes me up. Here I'll call him B, that's short for Baby Boy (I know he isn't a baby anymore but I get to call him that anyway, don't I). I drink some coffee, maybe read the paper and play a while with B. Once or twice a...

Making Indigoflood's Rats and Hatchets -

So another session on its way a week ago during the first and second of August. Again Sami brought his gear to Turku and we camped out at Indigofloods practise room. The saturday was reserved for all possible basic stuff Perttu needed to get done. First of laying down the rhythm tracks, to ease the singing, to the couple of songs that still had no guitars. Fortunately both were older tunes, and Peb went through them with no apparent problems. Altough the PRS he was playing had just new strings...
